HAs any one tried using a 3 x 10 crank with Apex shifters on a Fargo Ti using Wood chipper bars. What other modifications did you have to make ? Yes, 3 speed front derailleur. Trying to avoid using bar end shifters if at all possible. This is a set up for the Tour Divide 2015.

Before I bought a Rohloff hub, I used a Wolf Tooth 42 cog. This may be an easier way to get the gear ratios you need. You will need a taller gear. I used my 44 tooth chainring alot on the Divide. Coincidently, it is for sale!

I didn't mess with the Apex. I just added a friction bar end and picked up a cheap 3x MT derailler.
So simple.

But now I'm on a rohloff'd Krampus.

Interesting. I've been using a 42/28 2x10 on my Fargo and was considering dropping down to 39/26 for the TD...

I should have been more specific. I had a version 1 Fargo that came with an XT  triple crank 24 32 44 with an 11 36 9spd cassette. The gearing was fine for a 50 year old. It was also before I bought my bikepacking gear and was loaded fairly heavily. There is a LOT of climbing. There are lots of big ring pedal sections as well. The first week or so will be tough no matter what. After that it is all " Eat , Sleep, Ride"

harryonaspot - I figured erring on the side of caution was in my best interest. I figure if I finish, the number of times I would have wished for a lower gear will outweigh the number of times I would have been wanting a taller one. A 39x11 @ 90 RPM would put me at around 27.5 MPH or so.

Thanks all for the input : Set my bike up Xt 3 x 10 (22-32-42) Xt BB, SRAM XO 3 speed front derailleur attached to a Shimano 3 speed Bar end shifter. All works like a charm, so far

Another reason to use the bar end shifter is its more like to keeping working then an integrated brake shift lever.

I ran aero bars for a while, I put a 3spd trigger on the end of the aero extension (the same tube OD as an MTB bar). Worked very well.

Then I refined my gearing even more and found I only needed a 22-34 on the front and 11-36 on back. Plenty gear range.

Shimano also make an inline brake quick release for their post mount road brakes, you could run this inline with your Apex brifters and triple front, then use the QR to dump to granny. Might need a bit of machining to get the drop right, but easily done IMO if you like to tinker with tools.
