In case people missed this, here's a piece I did for Adventure Journal about bikepacking. They asked me to write about the "new bikepacking bags" so I riffed for a while and ended up with a quickie history of the sport. Certainly not definitive by any means, but a starting point. It's worth noting that Eric Parsons up in Anchorage was starting to develop kit for winter racing around the same time Jeff Boatman came up with his bag system that really launched bikepacking as we know it today. Now we have a lot of options for bag-makers and hopefully the innovations will continue.
