Since Paul thumbies are so popular among the bike packing set, I thought I would give you all a heads-up about a much cheaper alternative I recently discovered. Suntour has some thumb shifters that are $24 each (front and rear sold separately), or even less...universal cycles has then for $18.
Downside is that they are index only for the rear. However, As a bonus, you can pull off the shifters, and use the mounting bracket with shimano bar ends if that is your preference.

Just tried to find these and could not. Turns out the company is Sunrace, not Suntour!

Whoops! My bad. Yes, it is sunrace. Suntour made thumbies back in the day, but has dropped off the face of mainstream bike parts, though they still produce a bunch of parts that go on lower end bikes.

In the middle of the spectrum, I found the Interloc Racing Design XC-pro thumb shifters. $129 for a pair at Universal Cycles. They have an amazing feel, but the actual reason I bought them was that they used a hinged clamp to attach to the bars. Means you can run all the weird, alternative bars your little heart desires!
