I have a small backup that is powered by AA batteries, but I wanted to see if there were other options in solid state batteries that could provide multiple charges. Would like one that could be recharged via an outlet rather than depending on a USB port.
Thanks

Skip the battery: I have a Supernova dynamo hub for my front wheel.  From it I'm able to charge GPS or cellphone while riding, though it takes minimum 4 mph for the Garmin 705, 8 mph for an iPhone 5.  The hub uses 1-2 watts to turn it, almost nothing.  Power is regulated by one of these: http://www.sinewavecycles.com/products/sinewave-revolution .  The hub and power converter are both waterproof.  A little searching can find dynamo hubs for through-axles, snow bikes, whatever.

I tried a Goal 0 solar panel, it used two small solar panels to charge 4 AA batteries or what ever you plugged into it.  I did okay with just a GPS but could do nothing for a phone.  The battery pack they sell (separately) can be charged from a 120 v outlet, so maybe that is what you are looking for.

I brought two of these USB batteries from Monoprice on the CTR last year.

I used them to charge my Garmin 800, ipod, and phone. I kept them in my gas tank so I could charge the Garmin while in use.

If you bring an iphone/ipad charger then you can recharge them from an outlet if you end up in a restaurant or hotel. I don't think I needed to recharge mine.

Thanks folks. All of the options look good. I have checked out the dynamo hub/ wheel set up, and it would be ideal, especially for the ultra-haul. The solar charger is a pretty cool device unto itself.

I have a Mophie battery that is pretty good, it charges my iphone 5 twice on a charge. it does take a usb plug, but you can always use an adapter.

I recently purchased the Trent iCarrier 1200mAh charger. Have not taken it bikepacking yet but have charged the phone and iPad with it a few times just to test it out – fast charge and after doing both devices from near empty it still showed more than half the juice left. It gets excellent reviews and people are saying they get 6 full charges for an iPhone 5 out of it which would be plenty for me. Its not too large, but it is heavy. But I felt for $38 it was a pretty good deal. I am not a racer, just a recreational bikepacker and I use my iPhone also as a navigation device (on top of maps). It gets 4+ stars based on over 2000 reviews so it seemed like a pretty safe experiment. I love the idea of a hub, but its out of my price range.

The new trent batteries are awesome, I have been using them for traveling for a few years now and they are reliable. You can get them in the 1200mAh range that weigh around 8-10oz.

I recently bought the Anker Astro from amazon. So far its been awesome. It has charged my Iphone 5 seven times from dead to 100%. Its not much bigger than the Iphone but it is a little heavier than I would like. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D5T3QK4/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i03?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I use the power monkey extreme, rate it highly.  Charges via USB, but comes with a plugpack for wall charging.

I have just received one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Satechi-Portable-Extended-Blackberry-Playbook/dp/B0089DZNS4/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1395566838&sr=8-4&keywords=
I was recommended it by a mate, who has two of them.
Comes with one USB cable that you just plug in the adaptor that you require.
I have only had it for 2 days, so I have not tried it yet.

I paid about $45 for a 12,000 mAh EasyAcc battery from Amazon. It has worked flawlessly. 12,000 mAh is about 10 iPhone charges. It can be charged via USB or a wall outlet if you use the iPhone adapter or any other adapter. The redesigned one is even cheaper. If you get a "name brand" like Morphie you're going to pay about twice as much.

Has anyone tried recharging a battery pack from a dynamo like the SON?

i ran my gopro and a garmin gps (not at the same time) off a SON and a USBwerk.
sitting on my desk I have a limefuel 600mah pack that i bought specifically to use as an expanded buffer battery.
i have not tested it yet... but will give it a go next week.

it supports 'pass through' charing - meaning it can charge a device while being charge - something i wanted the option of on the bike.

do a search for the electronics thread. lots of good information there.

Yep I've charged my power monkeys with no issue, but you have to be realistic with charge/discharge cycles - you have to do the math on the current output of the SON and the capacity of the storage battery.
