I have read several accounts of people using bear spray.

I lived in Missoula, MT for about 8 years and most of the hunting guides I talked to referred to bear spray as seasoning for the bears. I think 2 legged critters are far more dangerous (or maybe dogs). I had multiple encounters with black bears, even a mom and cubs. They always went there own way and were cool to see in the wild.
If you're gutting an elk in the Bob or the Scapegoat wilderness, I would have a buddy watching out for the bears that come a runnin' when they hear the shot.
