Those who have raced the Divide with me before may remember me by my GDMBR handle, "buffalo soldier", inspired by the heroics of the 25th infantry 'bike corps' out of Missoula, who were the first fat tire tourists to ever cruise the Conti-divide north of Helena.

A relatively new blog is up, dedicated to the story of these VERY early bikepackers. http://www.bicyclecorps.blogspot.com/
It has some good reading if, like me, this kind of history inspires you.

As well, there's always the excellent PBS documentary about the bike corps if you want to know more. It's on netflix: http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Bicycle_Corps_America_s_Black_Army_on_Wheels/70095992?strackid=3188d91531a877a4_0_srl&strkid=1172194782_0_0&lnkctr=srchrd-sr&trkid=222336

That looks cool I just might have to do the netflix thing and check that out. Here in Tucson at Mr K's BBQ, in the Afro American Heritage Museum, they have an old bike and some other info on the Bicycle Corps. Not sure if it is a real vintage from the right time but it helps put it in perspective what the bikes would have been like.

I went to grad school in Missoula and it was pretty inspirational to learn about the Buffalo Soldiers' accomplishments.

GREAT STUFF! I know of a bike shop that has a bike from that era on display & it was rode from central Nebraska to eastern Colorado back in the late 1800's in a matter of a few days, amazing to think this was before a lot of roads were around to, I just found a county atlas/plat map from my county the other day from 1917 & what an adventure it would have been to be cycling in those days judging by the roads.

The BRAN ride (bicycle ride across nebraska) will be traveling through Nebraska this June through most of the country the soldiers passed through, the Nebraska Sandhills are truly some spectacular country.

As stated before, the US Bicycle Corps (hereafter abbreviated, "USBC") are my bicycling role models, as well as my "cowboy" heroes.  Thanks for the links! thumbsup
