Just returned from my Kaibab Plateau bikepacking trip this weekend. The route mostly followed the Kaibab Monstercross 125 route, but I chose to pay a visit to the Lookout Tower near the park entrance and I rode the AZT from the Grand Canyon park boundary all the way to Hwy 89A (instead of dropping off the east side of the plateau). Trip stats are as follows: 129 miles, 12.75K of elevation gain.

To answer your question, the white stuff is hail. It was quite possibly one of the worst storms I have been caught in to date. Definitely an "awakening" experience.

Better late than never! Any chance you'd be willing to share your Mogollon Rim route/trip? I'm looking to get one or two more bikepacking adventures in before the Coconino 250, and preferably at altitudes in excess of 6K.
