That's the one brilliant thanks proto! Well worth a read for anyone else, and I'll look over at the reenactment!
ps - out of curiosity - what made you choose your name on here?

Cool tee! I asked as I'm slightly in that area (dinos) as a line of work! And wow - I'd seem some info on the 508 before, I'd find that event hard before the temperatures, living up here in Finland now!

We made the protoceratops tees - me and the (then) seven year old. He drew a proto silhouette, then I cut the shape out of an old DVD case, and we painted them up with a little fabric paint on $3 clearance shirts. Part of the annual ritual now.
Protoceratops: precursor to the triceratops...big skull but not particularly bright; not well armored nor well armed; not very fast nor agile; somehow a good fit for me.
What do you do in the dinosaur field?
If it is WINDY in Finland, you would have liked this year's 508...

Anyone have more info on a Soviet cyclist named Gleb Travin? I was just clued into his story by a Russian acquaintance, and there is very little info on the internet in English. He rode around the entire perimeter of the Soviet Union between 1928 and 1931. A very short account of his trip in broken English can be found here: http://englishrussia.com/?p=7099

From the write-up on Gleb;
"The heroes Gleb adored were Faust, Odyssey and Don Quixote"
Are you sure the whole thing isn't/wasn't an elaborate hoax? I mean, c'mon: it's almost too perfect- triangulate between those three characters, and you're likely to get someone who'd ride his bike around Russia, solo, in 1930- and cut off his own toes...
Wild story. Badass dude. Thanks for the link.

I would hate to see it be a hoax, as there are a bunch of places in Russia named after the guy as far as I can tell.
I would definitely love to find out more on him.

I would chime in with "Two Wheels North" which is a tale of two boys who rode up the west coast form Santa Rosa to Seattle to see the worlds fair in 1909. Pretty inspiring stuff and an interesting look at life during that time.
Written by the grand daughter of one of the boys and includes some great pics and post cards back to the local paper.

For a setup that will seem completely familiar to folks on this board, check out the 25th Infantry at Fort Missoula. To test and validate the use of bicycles in the military, they rode 1900 miles to St. Louis in 1897. Thanks for remembering the US Bicycle Corps: these guys are both my bikepacking role models, AND my cowboy heroes!
