Hey all, here are a few photos from a short trip this past weekend.  Haven't been able to get out this year because of the new shop, but finally said enough and closed for a Saturday, heading out for at least an overnighter.  My friends Ryan and Danny joined for a couple days of very high altitude, primitive trail, really fun riding.  Typically I don't ride fatbikes in the summer, but given the primitive nature of the trails on our route we gave it a go.  Pretty fun as long as we weren't trying to rip descents... I was on my Fatback, Ryan on his Salsa, and Danny on his Pugs.  Ryan in the upper photo, Danny in the last two.  I took lots of photos but don't have time to post them all - here are a few good ones.  You may recognize Sections 22/23 of the CT, which we did on the second day.

For those of you planning on the CTR this year, there is water just before Cateract Lake in the valley leading out of Wagner Gulch.  Wasn't sure if the creek would be running, but it was going fine!  Smoke was visible as distant haze but immediate air quality was just fine.

This year I've been working with Andrew at Bedrock Bags quite a lot and I used his Entrada bar bag along with his Wingate stem bag.  Both performed flawlessly.  I like the Revelate seat bag because it's the best thing out there - and I like Bedrock bar bags because I think they're the best out there.  The fact that I contributed a few ideas to the bar bags has nothing to do with it...  Wink

Thanks!  In January I started Velorution Cycles in Durango after 16 years of working for other shops.  Specializing in bikepacking/touring/commuting/vintage/all the stuff I love, which makes us pretty niche in a town full of carbon race bikes.  Check it here: www.velorutioncycles.com

Have been working 12-14 hour days and just have been slacking on the riding.  Had to get out there!  No CTR for me this year, but maybe in 2013?

OK, million dollar question.  Reading both posts and your shop blog, you decided on your fat bike.  If you were to ride the CTR do you see any potential advantage to a fatbikes ?  You mentioned Seg 22/23 and I was wondering if a fatbikes might actually allow you to ride certain segments (like Seargents) more than a 29'r.

I'm still trying to decide if I should choose my 23# Ti 29'r or my 28.5# Mukluk.  Any thoughts.

Finally, I see you have HuDu's how did they perform on the ride.

After racing the CTR in 2011 on my ever-present 29er hardtail and enjoying my Fatback all winter of 11-12 I was wondering the same thing.  Part of my reason for taking the Fatback out on this trip... in the end, though, I think that when I get back to the CTR again I will definitely take my 29er.  The fatbikes are nice on really chunky stuff, so yeah, Sargents/22/23.  And the fatbikes carry weight well.  But even on the quicker parts of those sections, I found myself wanting to roll faster, carve tighter, and take advantage of actual damped suspension (rather than the undamped "boing" of giant tires).  I think that the fatbike on the CTR would be an overall disadvantage by a lot.  Touring pace is one thing, and I did enjoy the Fatback for this last little trip.  But racing - or just going fast for the hell of it - is different.

As for the Husker Du's, I got the last set in the country back in February.  I've liked them in everything from snow to dirt to rocks.  Way better than anything else out there right now in my opinion.  Your experience, of course, may vary...
