For those who don't- Geocaching- I use multi-million dollar military satellites to find tupperware hidden in the woods. In other words, it's a world-wide easter egg hunt using the GPS sysytem. Over a million caches are hidden world wide, waiting to be found. I do this when ever I can, and love doing this on my bike. On every terrain, either on a back woods trail or in a large city. When biking, this helps break up a trip into smaller segments and allows you to get off the bike to stretch out while you hunt for a few minutes. A fun way to use my Garmin Etrex GPS! I recently saw a documentary on this subject, sounds like some of the National Parks are considering banning the practice as it entices folks off trails thereby creating new trails.
I am sure it has it's place just never appealed to me personally to each his own as they say.

I actually like using geocaches as sort of a tourist guide when exploring a new area. I have no real interest in finding the cache itself, but just getting to the general area usually leads to some interesting places worth checking out.

Hi
I do geocaching in the city and when I can while touring. I find it is an interesting change of pace when out riding.

Geocaching goes great with bikepacking. I geocache almost exclusively by bike. It often brings me to interesting out of the way places that I may not have stopped and appreciated otherwise. Fellow bikepacker and Tour Divide racer daveB got me started geocaching on one of our first training rides together. We both geocached during the 2010 Tour Divide race although I only seriously looked for two and only found one because of the race situation. I'm sure daveB found many more than me during the race but I will never really know how many. I found geocache # GCVTKX outside Rawlins, WY and saw daveB had found it as well. It was before I knew what had happened to him - I wrote him a note even though he was ahead of me... I think of it as my last communication with him.

I've logged about 1500 of my 2155 finds while on a bike; it is an excellent diversion.

I was out on Sunday, took a nature break, and spotted a plastic container under a root. Out of curiosity I opened it to discover a bunch of trinkets and a list of names and dates. It was the first time I found a geocache container. I could see myself giving it a try. Sounds like a great family activity.

I take my 3.5 year old son all the time. It's extremely fun for him (me too).

Got about 2000 finds. Got tired of finding film canisters in light poles. Maybe one in 100 were worth the search. Usually the larger containers were the best to look for. Haven't searched for about 2 years now. I usually try to pick up ones in new states or countries but that's about it.

I used to do it to the point that I had a paid account. It kind of lost it appeal after a while. Pretty much finding the same things in different containers.

We do it with our 5 year old son. It gets him outside and he enjoys "looking for treasure."
