Planning on doing a month or so in ID this summer and went out to the National Forest sites to look for some info.  Happened to come across this picture in the recreation page section for 'Mountain Biking' on the Boise National Forest web site.  Hate to think what the image would have been if they actually had a bikepacking section!

Reminds me of my first bikepacking experience in '02 when I rode the 1 1/4 mile to the walk-in camp at Andrew Molera SP at Big Sur.  Close to 30lbs on my back and riding in heavy duty hiking boots on top of clip-ins.  No wonder it took 8 years to try it again!

My first "bikepacking" trip was pretty rough too. About twenty+ years ago, my father and I decided to ride our bikes part of the way to the start of an overnight multi-pitch climb in the Canadian Rockies. We carried a couple of ropes, a full climbing rack, tent, sleeping bags, climbing helmets, food, stove, etc. in HUGE packs and set off down the trail. I was REALLY glad when the trail got too technical to ride, and we dumped the bikes in the woods and stated walking. Oh yeah, I was riding a BMX bike in those days! I wish that I had pictures...

I've done that back in the day. Was never "that" heavy though. Man. Gotta love what's out there now for toting gear.
