The armies of most countries had bicycle corps. Tough guys. From a practical point of view, bikes became pretty much obsolete for military use once the motorcycle became reliable enough for the battlefield.
I'm thinking a rig like this one might not be a bad idea today when bikepacking in grizzly country. Probably also be good for riding on the road in areas where motorists are especially hostile toward cyclists.
