Ever since I got it in my head to ride the upper part of the TD route next Summer, I've been riding my new Broadaxe out on every gravel and dirt road that I can find. I came across the Forest Service maps (posted in another thread) and am learning how the local forest service roads and trails all interconnect here in the Cherokee forest. Although yesterday's ride was still about conditioning and enjoying a cold light rain, I did spend a good chunk of the day exploring out on some dead end roads and other trails between South Holston Lake and the mountain itself.

I've found some trails and roads that should get me to the top of the mountain to the trail that runs along the ridge. As long as I can find some up, along and over routes, I can piece together some real good 50+ mile routes with no trouble. All in all it was a great day. The wife was miffed that my 2 hour ride ended up being 4, but she got over that eventually.

Better let the wife know the rides will just be getting longer! It's pretty cool to get that familiarity with your Forest Service District. I had the same thing happen in the summer I was training before for TD, it got to the point where all the forest service guys knew me and would stop to say hello and chat a bit when I was way out in the middle of nowhere and so were they. Coming through Steamboat this year on TDR  I got to the top of Lynx Pass with Shane Rausch and was telling him that this is where I lived/trained and that I rode these dirt roads more than just about anyone and sure enough one of the forest service guys pulls up at random next to the Lynx Pass work station, gets out of his truck and says "Damn John, you're around the district more than any of our guys!" I just laughed, looked at Shane and said "see?" Keep truckin', those roads will nurture you.

Nice to see some one on here from my neck of the woods! There is great riding all over Holston mnt and this area in general. From Holston you can connect up to the Virginia Mnt bike trail as well.

Yesterday, I finally went out with the explicit intent on riding out "Old Dug Trail" which is shown as going from Big Rock Road to the top of Holston Mountain. With the trail conditions, there were some sections of hike a bike, but we still managed a lot of pedaling time too. So, not only exploring the main trail up to the top where the towers are, I also know the points where other trails leading to the top intersect the main ridge trail.

Had a very slow average speed but still gor 5 1/2 hours in the saddle.
