My buddy and I are planning to line up at the Tour Divide in 2014. North to south is the original plan, but now we’re wondering if we should go south to north? Those of you that have done this route, from your experience, what are the pros and cons? Was the starting weather better in New Mexico, or was it a muddy mess from their monsoon season? Were the grades steeper? Mosquitos worse as you got towards Montana? Easier to Navigate? What would you recommend to your friends if they wanted to do this ride?
Part of me wants to experience this the traditional way, but other part thinks the weather will be better and why not end it with the beauty of Montana and Canada?
We appreciate any advise or input you can pass along to us.
Thanks!

'14 will be my first time doing the Divide also. I am planning on going south to north for logistics reasons. I am in TX so Antelope Wells is only 800 miles or so from home and we have a family vacation cruise to Alaska leaving mid July from Seattle. The plan is to get to Banff and hang out with the family for a few days before heading to Seattle. If for some reason it looks like I won't make it in time then I can cut it short and head straight to Seattle.
The weather looks like it might be less of a challenge going south to north too. The overall elevation is about even but northbound might have slightly steeper sections. I was looking forward to the Grand Depart but there are future years for that. I am also interested in hearing the veterans thoughts on the subject.

What might decide it for me is if the prevailing winds are likely to be worse in one direction. Anyone know? I might be doing it in 2014 too and trying to decide which direction to go.

I went north to south. I think this way is better. You start right out with killer scenery from a town. You can get food and parts as needed. There isn't squat at the south end, including camp sites or restaurants. It is just easier to be in civilization to start. I think most of the big hills and technical spots are definitely easier this way too. Just my 2 cents, Harry

I have done most parts of it both ways and think its a crapshoot. Headwind seems to blow whatever way your going. It rains when you don't want it to. It snows in the higher elevations in June. Its hot and cold in the same day. The elevation gain looks better N to S but I really think it all averages out about the same. Harry has a good point about starting in civilization but once you get North of Silver City NM there are towns and/or services every couple of days. Whatever way you choose will be good.
