Looking for some advice for a hitch mount rack for a couple of mt bikes? What are others using? I am looking for a 2 bike rack for a 1 1/4 hitch on my VW sportwagen. I could go roof mount as I have the VW cross bars, but I didn't want all the wind noise and I already carry a ladder around most of the time and would only have room for 1 bike when I do. I saw a thule 990xt but read a review that said it is not that great for 29ers?

I and many of my friends have the 1Up racks: https://1upusa.com/ Not the cheapest but pretty damn bombproof.

I've got great fondness of my 1UP rack. Super stable.

I have a Rockymounts Monorail for 1.25" hitches and it's amazing. Fits any size bike/tire without adjustment/adapters and includes locks for bike to rack and rack to car. Cheaper than Thule/Saris/1up, etc.

I have a Thule DoubleTrack Pro that I got 25% off on a sale and love it. I particularly bought this style to be able to mount bikes with fenders, in case I ever need to. Great style if you ever want to carry a bike with racks, also, such as a commuter bike or touring bike. I learned this the hard way. :-(

1UP USA hands down. Rock solid in the receiver hitch and not single piece of plastic. Bike is on or off the rack in under 20 seconds. Made in Wisconsin

I have a Swagman that I got at eTrailer, along with the hitch. I have a VW GTI, also with the roof racks, but decided on the hitch rack because it's easier. Couldn't be happier. I mounted the hitch myself -- fairly easy. I assume the sportwagen has a hatch door, so make sure that whatever you get, it folds down out of the way. If it doesn't, you won't be able to open the hatch door with the rack installed. The Swagman not only folds down out of the way, but when the ratchet locks are all the way down, the hatch door clears the rack even when not folded down.

I purchased a Yakima Two Timer for my son, very affordable. I purchased the fat tire straps as an addition and it works very well.

NS racks don't work with fork fenders which seem pretty essential for Coastal BC winter riding. I was keen on one until I realized that.

Or carbon fat bike forks, but you hang them backwards sometimes (by the bars) if you're just going a short distance and the roads aren't too rough. We use an older version of the Yakima two timer. It's super fast and easy to use, only problem is it doesn't work very well for bikes really sloped top tubes. Anything that clamps the top tub will suffer this problem. Our version doesn't fit the fat bike cups, but we just sit it on top and bungee the tires and it works fine.

I recently got a Yakima Twotimer at an REI garage sale for $160 (normally about $360). Had not even been completely unpacked by the original purchaser. I am quite happy with it. The stabilizing arms push down on the frame instead of the tires, which is a bit unusual, but it is super solid once loaded. For reasons that are hard to explain in writing, there can be a little bit of bike shuffling depending on the difference in top tube heights if carrying two bikes (shorter top tubes need to go on first). And I had to buy the fat straps separately (about $12).
I got it because it fits all wheel sizes, including fatties. Plus it was on a serious discount. It replaced a hitch mounted Thule rack where the bikes hang from two arms. This is far superior (especially with FS bikes).
