Great write up, was following along as I have been wanting to do the same (although "downhill" starting in the Upstate).
I have only ridden some of the Enoree passage so far and it was FRUSTRATING. A downed tree just too big to cross every 20 yards, even on the 36er, so way too much dismounting to make it fun.
I particularly liked your "sad" and "happy" pictures. Not much difference there and reminds of the many mid-race smiling pictures I've sent the wife only to get back a "you look terrible" reply.
Did you follow a GPS track, use maps, or just trail signage?

The long haul on the flat being slower than expected sounds similar to being on a long distance rail trail.... Little coasting, no climbing to warrant standing up for a while....

Would you be willing to share your gps data? I'm curious what routes you took between established sections. Any small sections you skipped like Lynch's woods which is hiking only? I'd like to do this route when its not so hot, but thinking the trail will be very hard to follow with leaf cover in the winter. |

I can't wait to do the trip again, but not in the summer, way too hot. The trail is so well marked with signage and blazes on the trees that it would be a cinch to follow with the leaves down. Probably easier than when I did it in April.

PM'd. I live in the Raleigh, NC area but travel for work a lot in SC.
I'm sure you're right about the navigation, as you've done it before. The blow downs were the worst part for me of the little that I did. Perhaps I saw the worst of it and the rest was better.
I'd be looking at winter after the new year at the earliest as I need to clear it with work (kind of a 24/7 job) and the spouse. I'm curious about doing the whole thing as it stands now, hiking the parts that can't be ridden (not sure what the rules are yet in each of the parks it passes through). Very little in hiking overall but would be cool to say you did the whole thing.

Does anyone know where to buy a Palmetto Trail Map(waterproof)? Do they make section maps or are you guys just printing them at home?

Printing at home from websites on waterproof paper. I had called their office awhile back to ask about biking the hiking sections and got an answer I can't remember now. Some were hiking only just because they couldn't imagine biking it. Could easily carry your bike up stairs etc. Very nice woman in their main office was super helpful. I had at one point mapped out the whole thing in top of fusion for an attempt that never happened. Had some alternates in the "mountain" sections
