A brief account and some pix - the new Bergischer Weg hiking trail in Germany offers a fair diversity of terrain for bikers.

Hey Marten, I might have to check it out. I'm in Bayern so it's not so far away.

You can take a train to Bonn and start there. Cheap tickets are easy to find if you book a fortnight in advance.

There was an old Bergische Weg until a few years ago - much shorter and no longer signposted today. Tracks are probably still available on the internet, just to confuse people.  Wink

The new route is due for official opening at the end of September. I used the up-to-date track on the ADAC Wanderführer app (iOS), but can't transfer it to another app or device. The Wanderführer (~ 6 €) is great for research, featuring thousands of shorter and many long-distance hiking trails. At a pinch, you can use it for navigation, too... but there are snags. The main problem is that you lose your zoom factor whenever you put the phone to sleep to prolong battery life. So when you reactivate the phone, you have to re-zoom... which is fiddly while riding.

Best,

Martin
