Bike touring copper canyon MX

I am planning a bike tour around the Copper Canyon, Mexico area in Chihuahua. My planned starting point is Creel, with Urique and Basaseachi as stops. Does anyone have experience in this area? My hydrologist friend has done work in the area and described it as somewhat unsafe.

Are you doing an out and back?

From Creel, it’s pretty straight forward going to Urique.

Can’t remember the distance but there were a lot of road constructions back then trying to paved all of it.

We did it several years backs unknowingly almost close to the Ultrarunning race. I think that was the year it was cancelled due to on-going narco turf war in the valley. Wife and I stayed in the gringo campspot for several more day after the event and tried to climb out of the valley via Guachochi but the locals did not let us go because that’s where the turf war was.

Honestly, it all depends in your risk-tolerance. That part of Mexico has always been dangerous. Narcotraficantes are omnipresent threat in Mexico but that doesn’t mean they’ll come out of nowhere and gun you down.

Some think November is the best time to go to las Barrancas del Cobre.  A little cold at night, light wind, little rain, no plants in the fields for, what did he call them, Narcotraficantes to worry about.

Tren Chepe is so cool, the Tijuana policia stop robbing people long enough to reminance about it.

You can ride the Baja Divide, catch the ferry at La Paz and roll onto the tren Chepe.
