So we all know the tricks on how to lighten backpacking kits and one of the best ways is to have multifunctional things. That being said I saw this thing on the Poler website. It looks sort of strange, half sleeping bag half jacket. It looks like you can cinch it up to your waist. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these or opinions on these goofy looking things. It looks like it might be useful to be able to stop at the end of the night and just lay out a bivvy, uncinch and lay down.

Thoughts?

The medium poler packs to 8x18 or 8x10 in a compression sack and weighs 2 lbs 10oz. The large weighs 3 lbs 6 oz.

That seems like a lot of bulk and weight for what you get in a 50d bag.

The poler is clearly not a light weight item, so to me not really a bikepacking item.

Even the down one is heavier and not rated as warm as a regular sleeping bag like the Phantom 32.

I have been known to use my sleeping bag like a wrap while sitting in camp, but all of the extra fabric to make it into a convertible unit just adds weight and bulk. I've found that it's not just racers who benefit from lighter weight kits it's just more fun to ride in rough terrain when your kit is lighter.

Way too bulky. Even for full pannier travel.

Exped makes a few bag/coats that are a bit more appropriate for bike packing. I like the concept but I have not yet seen one of these that compells me to buy it.

Poler stuff looks cool and is neat in theory but seems more for the car camping crowd.

In bear country I wouldn't be too inclined to do my camp hanging out, cooking and eating in the thing I sleep in. Just my two cents.

Didn't look at the weight and pack size, thanks.
Could be a good MYOG project though (for those actually skilled at that stuff).

Cheap, light weight, and from what I've heard, warm.
