I set up my Niner Rip 9 FS for some upcoming bikepacking trips that are mostly singletrack (not the most comfortable for my ECR). Turns out the Jandd frame bag fits pretty well on this frame.

This is my Sram X9 Surly Karate Monkey. I have no idea what year the frame is, but it still has cantilever brake bosses, a standard 1 1/8" head tube (non-tapered), and no brace on the head tube end of the top tube. The fork is a Surly Ogre fork, with the extra bottle mounts, and also has cantilever brake bosses. I'm probably never going to use cantis, but it's good to have the option in an emergency.  Here it is naked. Loving the aerobars and the front rack is just on for some extra gear. My girlfriend and I did a 110-mile overnighter up in New Hampshire, so I had to bring panniers (we couldn't get a rack to work on her bike.  The bike handled fine with the heavy front load. I could still hop curbs and roots, anyways.  Cockpit View. The drivetrain is working ok. Bottom gear is a 26. I think I might swap the X9 derailleur for an X7 just so I can bend it back into shape after a rock hit. You can check out my gear list and the rest of my photos at my site: www.MaxTheCyclist.com. |

Hi Y'all,
Long time lurker first time poster. I am new to bike packing but not new to miles. I am very excited to get into this hobby. My love of nature coupled with trail shredding? dream come true! Below is my bike as its currently set up. I have a few things in the post. Currently, I am working on getting stuff ready for the Fall/ Winter season in Florida.

26" wheel 1990 Novara Ponderosa I bought for about $180 and had Corey Thompson add S&S couplers, change to 1-1/8" stem and a few other additions. Ran a packless system (Cleaveland frame bag, front roll & pocket, everything cages. Carousel Design seat pack & top tube pack, Jannd handlebar pouch) with a Nitto R12 rear rack to strap street shoes and dirty clothes on. Schwalbe Mondial marathon tires and Jones 710mm H-bars. Original 1990-era 3x7 Shimano Deore drivetrain, hubs and canti brakes, Suntour brake levers and thumb shifters. Gearing was 46-34-24 and 13-15-17-20-23-26-32 hyperglide. Rebuilt wheels with new spokes, same era rims. Homemade coroplast fenders zip-tied on (fenders highly recommended - mud, human and other feces, dead animals and anything imaginable). No computer/GPS.
Just completed a 1200+km tour in the Northern India Himalayas with no mechanicals or flats. About 75% off-pavement. Not bad for a 25 year old mountainbike.

Here's my Trek 29er that I took out a couple of days ago for a quick overnighter. Revelate Viscacha, gas tank and harness to carry sleeping gear, tent, clothes and sleeping pad.
I also have an Osprey backpack with a water reservoir too and extra packing space. Trying to go light as possible!

 I'm working on a lighter FS bikpacking setup for techy singletrack adventures with resupply options every couple days.  I packed all my usual 1 week+ gear less stove/fuel/pot/cup and only packed enough dry food for 2 days/1 night of riding. Took it for a run around a loop I regularly medium techy for coastal BC. Rode everything I normally would just a touch slower...although going slower meant I could ride with no stops and I finished the ride in the fastest time ever. I think with a UL quilt and a tarp instead of a tent I'll get the weight/bulk down to a very sweet spot. |
