I rode the CDN GDR last summer on my Surly Pugsley with panniers....never again! I'm going to setup my Surly Pugsley as a light weight touring machine with an Epic Designs frame bag and seat & handle bar bags from Porcelain Rocket. The bike was heavy which obviously takes a lot of effort to get over the mountains en route, but also means you have to ride conservatively on the way down to avoid damaging your rig. I think with less weight I'd have more fun and be able to cover the same route in probably 60%-70% of the time we took. Being able to ride my bike more like a mtn bike and less like a touring bike would be a lot more enjoyable. That said I had a blast and I'm glad I took the time to ride the new portion of the CDN GDR. safe riding, Vik www.thelazyrando.com |

What do you think of the leather saddle(s) that you guys used on your trip? Comfort and duriability, etc?

Well I rode 140kms on our longest day without any padded bike shorts...zero discomfort. The saddle is holding up to all my abuse just fine. They are waterproof and require no maintenance. Other than the high price there isn't much not to like. I own two and I'll buy a couple more as funds allow. |
