One day after coming in Colorado, I ran into somebody who raced Tour Divide at a roadhouse. He mentioned this website and I figured I'd share my experience of the Divide so far.

I am not exactly bikepacking (full touring load) - and it would be tough to bikepack it in the winter when so many lodges/stores shut down (not to mention winter gear, etc.)

Here are the first 3 entries (starting on Oct 14th from Banff)

http://www.bikewanderer.com/the-great-divide-montana

http://www.bikewanderer.com/the-great-divide-wyoming

movie also in the works (similar to what I did with Canada's arctic).

Was great to meet you at Hahn's Peak Roadhouse yesterday iohangue, I'll be following along on your adventure! Had a really nice time chatting and had a great day skiing after I saw you, hope you had a nice ride in to Steamboat on the snow packed roads.  Here's the couple shots of you and your rig I took yesterday at the Roadhouse. Best of luck on your journey!

Great stuff! Will be looking forward your NM leg. We have some land near El Malpais which the TD passes near. If you need a break at that point, let me know and we can set you up.

Ride on!

Looking great, iohangue -- way to stay out there beyond the 'ideal' season and ride anyway.  Thanks for the photos.

Makes me wonder if anyone has looked into or attempted a GDMBR traversal in the middle of winter... some roads should have snow machine traffic on them you'd think.  Some won't.  Parts will be dirt.

Calling all fatbikers...

Wow : )  .. great blog and will be reading with interest. Amazing ride, good luck.

That second pic down, where is that? Rocks looks oddly familiar as a place I stopped to bivi, somewhere in the hills (Sandy Wilderness / Bridger area) after Boulder, before the road section into Basin proper began. Probably not though.

Here is a video of riding the divide in winter. Starts off fairly nicely with some rain and clear but cold nights through Canada and Montana and it gets really ugly in the divide basin in Wyoming.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa_28YltsuY

I ended up stopping in Colorado after Boreas Pass due to snow.

I've also finally caved in to do bikepacking, largely thanks to winning the ranger competition for 2015. (photocredit @radavist)
I'll be attempting the continental divide trial in June (which scott did last year).

p.s. sorry John, I hope I didn't make you look silly in the video! Smiley

Great video Iohan, finally got a chance to sit down and watch the whole thing. The only one making me look silly in it is me! I'm really glad we met that day at Hahn's Peak Roadhouse, keep me posted on your upcoming CDT adventure. I'm really happy to see you're going to be taking the plunge into bikepacking and I'm sure you are going to enjoy yourself and be in for one heck of an adventure this summer. Let me know when you get near Steamboat and lets rendezvous. Cheers from a kindred soul.

I've watched this video a couple of times and passed it on to others.  Great attitude and perspective.  Now, have watched part of the Yukon trip.

Thank You  Iohan.

Rode out yesterday to meet up and ride with Iohan as he made his way through on the GDMBR headed south. He'll be making his way all the way to Columbia by bicycle this summer. Here are a few pictures as we dropped in to Clark, CO from up towards Brush Mountain, notice he's a bikepacker now instead of using panniers! He said he's really been enjoying being on a MTB with bags this time around.  thumbsup

Iohan got a flat right at the head of Robert Orr's driveway descending on RCR62 coming in to Clark... since he's not racing I donated a spare tube to his cause:

Had a great time riding and visiting with you again Iohan, keep 'em spinning!
