This is just a small ride report from a short overnighter, not ambitious enough to put it into the trip reports list.

I've had plans for an overnighter to a nearby small wilderness area for some time now, and yesterday the time was right. Toni Lund had also expressed interest in this and this weekend suited him as well.

The summer just started a few days ago, so packing the bike is easy. I took some food, a stove, water, spare/night clothes, a short sleeping pad, a bivy bag and a small silk liner, but no sleeping bag, since the weather forecast promised at least 12°C (53°F) for the night.

Riding towards Paimio on the smallest roads I could find.

In Paimio Toni Lund joined me.

Finally the trails begin.

Soon it will be dark enough for...

...lights to be needed.

It was quite dark when we arrived at the lean-to. I had been riding for 4,5 hours and 75 km. The air was very warm. Despite having a relatively low energy level after riding fairly hard I was still comfortable in a short sleeved jersey and bike shorts.

We started a fire and transformed our sandwhiches into delicious toasts.

At some point we went to sleep under the sky. A nice bonus of having had the eyes lasered is that now I can actually see the stars when sleeping under them. Around three o'clock in the morning it started to rain, and then we moved into the lean-to.

The next morning. We got up around 5:45.

The lean-to.

Morning view.

Breakfast.

We started to ride at around 7 o'clock. There were lots of boardwalk ahead.

Not everything was rideable.

Just a few hundred meters before we arrived at the dirt road, my Thudbuster broke. The blue elastomer broke after four years of usage. However, the package contained several of them, so fixing this is a piece of cake. (Picture taken later).

Soon after this we arrived at a dirt road. We were running out of time and decided to take the fastest road back, which for me meant about 2,5 hours of riding. We managed to ride maybe half of the trails in the area, so we definitely need to returns sometime. This day I rode for around 4 h 15 min on the bike and 60 km.

A slide show with more pictures is found here.

Looks like a GREAT trip! I like the looks of the country & LOVE the lean-to, man I wish we had places like that where I live to spend the night. Are the board walks there on account of the soft ground? My daughter is on her way to Sweden in Aug for a year, perhaps I should try to get over there to visit her while she's there!

Great report, fascinating to see what your local trails look like.  Is it common to have those boards on the trail?  Looks like it'd be fun for a while, then maybe annoying?  Better than slogging through mud, I suppose.  Thanks for the post.

Awesome post. That looks like a really good, fun, down to earth trip.

Strange. I actually thought I already wrote this, but it must have gone to the bit heaven.

Anyway, despite the pictures, boardwalks constitute only a small part of the trails. They are usually easy to ride once you get the hang of it, but they demand a strange mix of relaxation and concentration. Boardwalks are used when the ground is soft enough any sort of wear turns it into mud, e.g. on peat bogs. The boardwalks are found on more official routes and are made for hikers, though there is usually no conflict between hikers and mtb riders. Most of our rideable trails are completely unofficial and are generally found where people move by foot (and to a lesser degree by mtb) in the terrain. It is all possible through the everyman's right, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_to_roam#In_the_Nordic_countries.

Great report! I'm over east in Helsinki and have been reading about your exploits and Toni's too, would love to join you on a trip sometime (the ice road would be great if it's made this winter) though my Finnish is practically nonexistent. Most of my bikepacking has been out of Finland in the UK and the USA, only local stuff round here really, so should really get out into the wilds a bit more!

The ice road trip is not possible very often. I had high hopes this winter, since it was unusually cold, but the ice came to late and it did not become strong enough for the official ice roads to open.

I have a longer version of last years Kuhankuono - La grande finale tour planned (see http://yetirides.blogspot.com/2009/07/kuhankuono-la-grande-finale-day-1.html, but still no date for it. Probably July or August would be a good time for it. You are welcome to join us if you are interested.
