Harbor Freight sells this cheap headlamp:
https://www.harborfreight.com/lighting/flashlights/all-head-lamps/swivel-lens-led-headlamp-63598.htmlIt looks like sometimes it is free with a coupon. I spent the $2.50 and got it:
Out of the box, the o-ring sealing the battery compartment was severed. (This is Harbor Freight after all).
The battery door latch seemed like it was a little flimsy so a made a retention strap out some scrap fabric and strips of bike inner tube:
Better:
The OEM elastic head strap comes of easily. Sewed up a elastic/velcro strap. Added a 'pillow' that contains a piece of foam contoured to the grooves in my helmet.
Remove OEM headband and mount it up:
The velcro/elastic strap and the OEM headband can be exchanged as needed.

So there it is, nearly free. Of course, you get what you pay for... I don't think this lamp will last long in wet weather. Additionally, the beam pattern is spot focused, so the intense beam isn't very wide. Also, the detent that adjust the headlamp angle to its base are pretty widely spaced. Even with the faults, it should be fine for my needs, if it fails, replacements are cheap.
