Just thought I'd share some pics of the cuben fiber Fanny Pack aka seat bag I recently made. It's the 2.92 oz cuben hybrid from Zpacks. I don't think the lighter weight cuben will hold up to the constant rubbing where it contacts the bike. So I thought this cuben with a 50 denier polyester layer, would hold up better and be easier to work with. It was easy to sew, i just used a smaller needle and thread. Next time I would like to try to tape the seams instead of sewing. I tested it out on an 80 mile bikewhacking I mean packing trip on the High country pathway. I am pleased to report that it didn't fall apart or get punctured on any of the downed trees we had to smash our bikes through. Check out http://www.flickr.com/photos/barkingbearbagworks/ for pictures of the ride.

Flickr makes it a pain to imbed photos.  You basically have to click on the three dots on the bottom right of the image (or right click) and click on "view all sizes"  then select the image size you want, right click on the image and select "copy image url"

The bag looks great and the ride looked epic!  Some excellent attention to detail on the bag's construction.

Good question. I don't have a scale so I never weighed it. Now it is living in Morocco with my buddy who rode the GDMBR this past summer. I bought some of the lighter weight cuben that I plan on making a whole kit using that and the heavier hybrid. Just got to make everyone else's stuff first....

This looks awesome!  icon_biggrin You've inspired me to explore sewing, the different materials available for a saddle bag I can take on marathon adventures.  I've seen some from Rocketfish and Revelate designs, but not quite custom!  I'm thinking a 1.9oz silicone coated 70d nylon because it's about 20 dollars less per yard, available in many colors (not just white) and will weigh negligibly more than cuben fiber.  Thank you very much for sharing your sewing experience with the online community, now I can order some cheap fabric to build a prototype and learn for myself. thumbsup
