Ok ok not off road but... A couple of photos of my project to add to those here. There don't seem to be many panniers featured on the site, but I like them. Mine are based on a pair of Ortlieb back rollers, and made in Cuben material (49g/sm). Not so well made and it was a test run for other stuff I want to make. Not super light but still quite a bit less than standard Ortleibs at 850g( 30oz). Been on one big trip with them in the Alps and their insides stayed nice and dry through a day long deluge. ( unlike me  ) |

Those look pretty cool. I just bought some cuben that I want to make some bags out of. So what did you use as far as needle and thread size? What kind of seam did you use? Do you have any other hints or tips for cuben?? Thanks

Hi thanks for the interest,
I actually used cuben adhesive tape, you apply the adhesive side to the surface and peel off the backing, so no sewing was involved at all. I used this as I heard that sewing can weaken the material?... but mainly because I don't have a sewing machine! You can also apply a primer to the cuben surface to improve the bond apparently, (though this stuff seemed to give me a headache even when using outside, so I didn't like using it much, maybe I'm just sensitive to it as from what I could find out there weren't any very unusual ingredients in it).
The bags seem to be perfectly strong enough and Ive carried quite a heavy load of shopping in them by the handles without problems so taping seems to work so far..

How did you attach the hardware?? I will sew mine because the tape sounds like a pain to me plus I didn't order any and sewing is what I do.

Z-packs has many different weights. I ordered the heaviest at 2.92oz a yard. It's expensive but light and strong.

I bolted the hangers to a back plate through holes in the cuben. I made the holes with a small soldering iron. The top closure is also bolted on, not sure if you can see much in the last photo. As for sewing info I found they were sewing with a small sized needle (6 or 7, whatever that means) and relatively large spacing in the sewing, 2-3mm . (Sorry can't find the source at moment).
