For my tour ride, I want to have some rain gear along that is light and inexpensive enough to be disposable. A few years ago I was fat... I went from around 265 to under 200. Recently when going through old clothes we pitched a bunch of old "fat" clothes. Some of them were "fat" pants. I took one of the better pairs and cut out all of the seams for a template for rain pants. I already have a good patter for a rain jacket.
I made them with 1.9 ounce rip stop waterproof nylon.
I will be adding in a draw string at the top.
One added feature is a pleat on the front on the sides by the knees. The fold is down so water will not collect. surprisingly this little addition of the pleat makes knee movement much easier than with standard straight rain pants.
Here are the pleats one one leg and you can see them in the other leg as well.
The top waist line.
The good... Material cost? The fabric is a bit more than $3.00 a yard. This puts it at about $4.00 in material.
Also good... Weight is 111g.
The bad... The material does not breathe. At all... V2.0 will use a breathable fabric.
What I learned. Add about 1" on each side in the front crotch area. The draw string will take up the slack. The pants were originally designed for a fly to be open so they are a bit tight pulling up.
So for about $4.00 in material and an hour or 2 of time, I have a set of water proof rain pants. That can't be missed. This fabric is BRIGHT! And if I trash them and have to pitch them on the trail, I am not out a lot.
Next... Breathable fabric.
