This little project came about for a 67-mile stretch on white rim, without a water source. I needed to carry quite a bit of water and my full suspension bike only has one bottle mount so…..
I spent way to much time trying to avoid hose-clamping cages to the fork for two reasons, first I didn’t like the possibility of the cages sliding down or rotating on the bumps and second because I’m petty and didn’t want to scratch the paint on my fork.

For the “passenger side” of the bike I found a length of steel rod lying around which fit perfectly into the hollow inside of a fox 15mm quick release. I simply heated the rod, bent it 90 degrees, cut to an appropriate length and caped the end with a small amount of automotive heater hose (to space rod away from fork and prevent the dreaded scratching effect). I then cut two small pieces of 1.5 angle iron, drilled hoes in them, welded them to the rod at the appropriate spacing and pop-riveted the cages to them. From here just slid them in and either hose clamp or zip tie the top of the rod (with rubber hose over it) to the fork to prevent the cages from rotating.

The “driver side” of the hollow Q.R. is of course covered up by the quick release lever, so I got a simple flat washer big enough to slide over the Q.R. axel, welded it to another length of rod, ground the weld down flush with the washer and capped the rod with a small piece of hose again. Then again I just cut two small pieces of 1.5 angle iron, drilled hoes in them, welded them to the rod at the appropriate spacing for a water bottle cage and pop-riveted the cages to them.

So how do they work? Well they held water bottles, were quite and didn’t move or scratch my forks so I like them. Before the cages were riveted the hardware weighed 4 oz minus either the zip ties or hose clamps for the top end.

Possible problems, well it slows down front wheel removal but doesn’t require you to take off the cages, just fiddle with alignment during reinstall. A couple bumps ejected a bottle once or twice, now I run them with a small strap around them. And of course you have to stop the bike to access the bottles so I rotating them into fifth makes since for me.

This thread inspired me to take a welding class!  I'm 3 weeks in right now and loving it.  Thanks so much 303!

That’s awesome, it's such a great skill to have! What are you learning? I've been thinking about learning to TIG...
I haven't had time to write up a report but i recently made a custom aluminum rack and it would have been so much easier had I just been able to weld aluminum.
