I got some X-Pac and been thinking at trying my hand at making my own frame bag. I never seen one in person, was wondering who wide they are? Worrying about legs rubbing again.

I went for a few rides staring at my legs while I pedaled to see how much space there was. I made mine 3 inches in back and 5 inches by the head tube so I could fit my cook kit there. Overall it works OK but 2.5 would probably have been better in the back. I like the wider front for more storage capacity but when standing on steep climbs I can hit it with my knees. It's not a big deal to me and seems a decent compromise for the added capacity.

I did 2" (all sides) and would definitely go wider. The only time I hit the bag is when I brush the zipper flap when the bag is at capacity (read: bulging).

I make most of my bags with an outside dimension of 2.5" tapering up to 3.5" at the head tube. Depending on geometry and rider size there can be some knee touch while standing in pedals but nothing too significant. I like to store my cook pot in my frame bag and this width allows me to store a couple of different types depending on if I am alone or traveling with a companion.

I cut the fabric to 3.5" or 3.75" and for bags with a front taper, I taper the front 10" from 3.5" to 4.75"

I make mine @ 2" tapering to 1.5 down near the pedals. The bag can then stretch a little while packing it full and there is plenty of pedal clearance. The tapering ideas above are great ways to adapt bags to any style of frame. Great adaptability!

When I designed my framebag, I used a bottle holder to define the width. I knew that a bottle in seat/vertical tube didn´t disturb me, so a bottle holder width framebag does not disturb me now.
