I have been thinking about design problems and potential solutions for a gas tank style bag and it occurred to me that the cable routing on my bike runs along the top of the top-tube. It seems to me that the bag would rub on and possibly affect cable action. Has anyone come up with a nifty spacer solution or is this a problem that I don't need to worry about?

Full length cable housing will fix the the issue of cable rub.

I solved this problem on my CX bike by electrical taping a couple finger sized scraps of wood to the top tub parallel to the cables. This created a channel for the cables and enough of a platform for the top-tube bag that the cables move fine. It is ugly, but it works. Full length housing would be a more elegant way and I keep saying I'm going to take off the wood and put on housing; it has been 3 years.

I found it to be a non-issue. In my case the bags are mostly held tight against the cable stops, cable housing, head/seat tube. The bag-cable contact doesn't add any noticeable friction.

On my Orbea Alma this was a big issue for the rear derailleur. I ended up using a section of brake cable housing that was cut to the length of the open section of derailleur cable (probably 14"?). This was clean. I opted for brake cable housing vs. derailleur housing because it created less friction for that area than a piece of SIS housing would so dirt getting in there was less of an issue.

My dad has this issue on his CX bike. He taped a washing machine drain hose mounting bracket (it is basically a pipe elbow split in half) to his frame where the gas tank sits. A couple ounces, but keeps the cables happy; you just velcro the bag on over the bracket as normal.

Seriously this is a non-issue. Can't feel it and doesn't impact braking, can't feel it and doesn't impact shifting.
