Water bottles at the rear axle

I have seen some folks rolling around with water bottles mounted near the rear axle.  Maybe someone will share how they did it.  My first try failed after about 200 miles.

I've done it by mounting the lower cage hole to the fender/rack mount at the dropout, and the upper cage hole to a p-clamp on the seat stay. I haven't put many miles on such a setup, but it held for the ~50 mile ride I did with it. If it were to fail I'd guess it'd be at the p-clamps; a couple spare p-clamps wouldn't be a bad idea.

That is what I did.  It was the cage that broke.   It snapped just above the fender rack mount.  3 days later the other side gave way.  The second side was surly fastened tightly.  I had a small strip of metal between the p-clamp and the top hole in the bottle cage, to keep the cage more up right.  They were a stainless cages of top quality.  I had a 40 ounce bottle in each cage.  I suppose the p clamp and strip allowed to much in and out motion.

Ah, I suspect you're right. IIRC, I only ran standard-sized water bottles. But perhaps they still would've failed in time, in the same way your's did.

Some folks seem to get a lot of miles out of theirs,
could be,
they know something I do not,
anybody got a photo of the setup that lasted a thousand or 3 miles?
