I'm getting started on my second frame bag and I'm looking for opinions. Why is the zipper into the main compartment always on the right side?

When I stop, I get off on the left side and lean the right side of the bike against a tree, post, wall, whatever. I'm facing the left side of the bike. Why wouldn't I want the zipper on the left side?

I'm probably over-thinking this, but I wondered if anyone could offer any insight or tell me why the zipper always seems to be on the right side.

Thanks,
Jerry

I'm right handed and I access the main compartment while riding often, on the right side of the bag. Also, I'm in the habit of not leaning the drive side against stuff or laying the bike on that side. I have a steel frame with non-replaceable hanger and I've bent it that way in the past.

However, there isn't a reason to not have it on the left, if it's your preferance.

Okay, I hadn't thought about laying the bike down. I rarely do that, but after thinking about it, I can see a good reason to put the zip on the right side. Makes sense now.

Thanks guys.

A) Drive side up when the bike is laying down and the bag is open.
B) Most people are right handed
C) Still able to have most of your braking available via the left hand when using the right hand to get into bag

I've just started on a frame pack for my touring bike and the main compartment access is going to be on the left side, map/paperwork thin pocket on the right. I'm not left handed. I always get off on the left side of the bike and push the bike on the left side which is when I often access stuff I need.

Depending on the country I'm riding in, right side of the road means leaning the bike on poles, trees, barriers on the right side, accessing stuff on the left...in New Zealand on the other hand....well. Do what you think will work for you.... and post some pics when you're done!

my wife made my frame bag and I had her put the zipper on the left side because, like you JerryW, I get off my bike on the left side most times.  It works out perfectly and I love it.  For whatever reason, I never really get into my frame bag while the bike is laying on the ground. In fact, I don't think I ever get into it while it's on the ground.  I also use stuff sacks to keep stuff organized in the frame bag so it's easy to get to everything.

Hey JerryW, SouthMark from HF and Walls of Jericho. I too dismount on my left even though I am right handed. I am the only one in our bike club that does this. It just feels more natural to me but I almost never lay my bike down.
