The bike was heavy which obviously takes a lot of effort to get over the mountains en route, but also means you have to ride conservatively on the way down to avoid damaging your rig.  I think with less weight I'd have more fun and be able to cover the same route in probably 60%-70% of the time we took.  Being able to ride my bike more like a mtn bike and less like a touring bike would be a lot more enjoyable.

That said I had a blast and I'm glad I took the time to ride the new portion of the CDN GDR.

I'm running a Shimano Alfine in my Surly Pugsley.  It has worked great for snow, sand, beach riding as well as the CDN GDR.
