I looked at his spot on satellite view and it looks real disturbing. If he was someone that I knew well I would be panicking for sure and calling for help. He could have gone into the woods for any number of reasons and gotten lost. I think in a case like this it is better to take action sooner rather than later.

I want a race where there are no rules! Dirty tricks, hitching in the middle of the night, drafting, littering, stealth electric motors, tacks in the road, fist fights, a true made for TV reality show!

I can't believe I am wading further into this but here goes! Bootleg?? Well with bootleg events come bootleg efforts and bootleg interpretations! Are rule infractions any more prevalent now than "back in the day"?? The greater the number of participants the greater the number of infractions. And with spot trackers and forum police come more accusations of wrong doing. I put on small bicycle events and bicycle races. I can't bootleg them other wise the local authorities would have my head. As far as integrity goes over the years I have only had to disqualify one individual due to cutting the course. I was made aware of this by other racers and I tried to get them to work it out among themselves but in the end I had to be the "decider" Ultimately it is up to the organizer to make the rules and deal with any rule violations and to get the word out to all racers what the rules are and the consequences of rule violations. If the pre race organization is not up to the level of what we expect from the racers then there is a problem. I tongue in cheek nominated Toby Gadd as Grand Poobah but in reality this is what needs to be done. Written rules set in stone well before the event. Only racers who have sent in LOI and have signed off on the rules will be officially recognized. An organizer at the start of the Grand Depart with a bullhorn going over the rules of the event. Designated spot stalkers to look over course deviations. A cheater hotline! (Joe Polk??) I understand these events are a labor of love for the ones who start them and they have given me a great level of satisfaction in my participation in them, but when people start hollering about rule violations and that becomes the focus of the conversation then something needs to be done. We need to get back to what these events are all about, and that is the pushing one's limits, meeting great people, awesome experiences and lying in the woods late at night worrying about bears and other critters!

Less interesting?? Dirt>Pavement! But still an awesome ride by all involved and instead of bears they have tons more cars to deal with. Give me bears any day of the week. Bear rage is rare! Looking forward to the movie and Billy Rice's trials and tribulations!

I nominate Toby to be Judge Jury and executioner! If everyone is so concerned about rule infractions in essentially a "non event" then some sort of authority should be responsible for determining placing and DQ's. I never understood the no forward hitch rule even back in the dark ages. Who could possibly benefit from hitching forward, then hitching back to recon the course?? Seems like you would be better off riding your bike or sleeping! It is a much bigger advantage to have previously ridden the course in my opinion. Also trail magic is nothing in comparison to the places that throw their doors open for racers during the Tour Divide. Imagine no Brush Mt Lodge or the Lodge in Polaris? Then there is the issue of ITT's and trying to pick the best conditions. I say only N to S Grand depart runs should qualify for the records and only by rookies! BTW;)

Perhaps it is the racers themselves that should arbitrate who should and should not be DQed. You know the people out there that are doing all the suffering! This is not the golf channel where you call in someone for washing their balls wrong!

I think Mike Dion is setting up these controversies to make his movie a little more exciting. Rumor has it Geraldo Rivera is part of the filming crew and that he will be confronting the racers who appear to be taking shortcuts!! Ha ha!

And Toby certainly has had positions and the flak that positions entail! But regardless of how pure anyone is, I would think for most the TD is a life changing experience.

And how "pure" is it to edit your original post so it confuses the readers of the topic?? I don't think some people will be happy unless they turn it into a crucifixion, and usually they are the armchair quarterbacks!

I think a dynamo system should simplify things, not make them more complicated. I would use it for light and to keep a smart phone charged up. The smart phone could be used for camera, video player, music, phone and even your gps. As smartphones progress, I think the standalone gps units will fade out. Your spot would be battery powered but with good batteries you can get almost a weeks worth of use with that. I would run a gps on batteries too and have a backup battery powered helmet light. To me having endless light and not worrying about a smartphone going dead is liberating.

I have to laugh at my initial setup towards the front of this thread. Trying to do way too much!! I learned that a dynamo hub is not a nuclear powered generating plant! For me the Luxos U is an awesome system, combining light, up to one amp controller, a small cache battery and a handlebar mounted light switch with a built in USB port. I think this would be the ultimate Tour Divide setup. For single track you would probably want to add a helmet light.
