yeah i was going to say post the address of SB cuz there are 2 krogers and 3 SB in town... anyway, i had originally posted to ask about sharing the hotel the night before, i have since decided to stop at a campground the night before about an hour out of town on my way down, so i am out for sharing a hotel that night now. because of that camp, i won't be able to meet the night before, but figure we will round up at the SB/Krogers that AM and :thumbsup:party pace to the memorial? dont' leave without me

http://transiowa.blogspot.com/it does seem on for 2013 now. i am debating trying it out. kind of bummed the route is one that changes every year, so comparable times between the years is not possible, it's just like a real 'race'. this is far for me, coming from PA, but still interested to do it once and see how it goes. once i plan the trip though i'm pretty committed even if the weather would turn to a nasty forecast, that is the only thing about traveling so far:-(

hey i don't see any campgrounds that are really close to the start for this, so i guess i am going to be looking at a hotel for the night before and whichever night i get done. the ones close to the start are expensive and the cheaper ones are a little drive in the AM....is anyone else needing to use a hotel also that would like to share or something? i would rather get one with outside door access so we can come/go as we want with extra people and our bike stuff, etc. or if anyone already has something i can pitch in on? thanks, ruth.

the above suggestions are both good, you need to experiment and see what works for you with this stuff there are so many variables. recently i had some issues i thought were related to electrolytes and in reading a ton of stuff it seems the best thing you can do for your body in relation to the electrolytes you need during any excercise is to maintain a diet of unprocessed foods and LOW sodium. if your base body metabolism is used to functioning on low salt amounts it will not have much trouble doing so during exercise, it keeps a homeostatic level more easily without relying on a salt intake...as long as like stated already, you do not overdrink....

wow, i can't believe the poll on this string says over 50% agrees that free use of cell phone discussion on strategy, weather, etc is ok. i agree with the last 2 comments, keep it real. I've been around people using them quite often and i was kind of disgusted with the whole event after that. let's face it, the only reason bikepacking is even growing in popularity the last few years is the fact of using technology in one way or another makes it easier!!! between routing on gps now, spot tracking, and phones really cut out a bulk of the original tactics/skills that were used and that most people would not attempt routinely or on such long routes. I intend on continuing to not use mine no matter what anyone else does or how it puts me behind! (now if i am out somewhere completely on my own scouting around, not for timing, then hell yeah I call home routinely!!)

I've only done like 3-4 days stuff, but I don't think they should be used. I don't use mine, I feel talking to anyone outside who I encounter is motivational support and the apps are just plain support. I carry one OFF, for emergencies only. I have used it to call MTB Cast a few times because I thought my spot was not working and just wanted to make sure someone got the message where I was in terms for safety. I doubt I would have service often anyway?? but then again, i only aim to do 3-4 days out at the most and no matter what advantage I have I'm bringing up the rear anyhow so maybe that is why I have these opinions? who knows, I just hope rules don't have to be made about it, in the meantime, I like challenging through the mental toughness of not having another person to encourage me, i think it's part of the whole experience

Im all for supporting the initiative too for what you are doing with the AML, but I have to agree with JHL. In that area in particular is awesome and as you saw he did post from his knack at scouting/routing some really cool off road alternatives. I'm a little sad that same exploratory passion doesn't seem to be much on a lot of posts in general for newish routes/ideas. keep it up JHL....in fact you need to stop posting all your hard (fun) work for free and publish a book

is everyone really down with the southern ending of this to be using the tnga to the AL border? just because it's routed? albeit a lot more green on the topo up across there, but the 'divide' actually extends to southern FL....if that is what the route is to be?? or not? i believe a (short) portion goes near the withlacoochee watershed which is probably some of what karlos has already marked up in his Huracan 300/cross FL ITT rides?? just wondering.... i'm not crazy about including crocs in the mix, but the riding there is really way cooler and not as easy as you would think.

jeff, tim: did the last van & truck combination actually happening? if so pretty sure two of us flying in would chip in for this option to the start. the only thing we are not getting to tucson until 10PM on 4/11 due to airlines changed the flights .... we don't have a rental car reserved yet, anyone else leaving the airport that evening want to share one to get to a place (the hostel mentioned in AZT string?) to sleep. but then we would need help dropping it off before hopping on the van/truck.....

this is not TOO far from where I live, I plan to do it as an early year practice ride. not exact sure of the dates, but I have ability to use several weekdays around work vs just weekends so will probably do that, if anyone is interested...I know there are some sweet dirt trail options off of this route, and some other stuff, but I will be sticking just to the routing course right now....
