Brendan,
I see there is a waiting list to go on the route with everyone. Would it be ok if i tagged along and gave you my SPOT info if i can get off work? Please let me know as i would love to make this ride.\
Taylor
Taylor, check your inbox this evening. Let's get you rolling. As for completion times on the route, I expect the bell curve to be around 4 days, based on my own expected time. And I'm just an ordinary caveman. It'll be a tough 4 days on the bike for sure; getting up early, riding all day, going to bed exhausted. Some riders who really go for it will crack under that time, and others will finish closer to 5 days.

Hey all!
It's come to my attention that- for at least a few- people might be expecting the route to be a leisurely dirt road cruise. It's not! There's soft sand, hard rocks, areas that require route finding, and lots of singletrack... especially for the first half of the route. The route is rugged, remote, very difficult stuff. We don't have the luxury of having hundreds of riders wearing grooves in the route ahead of us.
There's little to no beta. Still not sure what to expect? Crack open a map and have a look for yourself.

I'll also make myself available Thursday for a run to airport in Palm Springs. I'll be rolling our Subaru, unless I can get my hands on a bigger people hauler.
Also-- parking in Idyllwild continues to be a head scratcher. There aren't any viable spots coming to mind, but we'll have to come up with something. We can stash a few at our house, and a few at the Siren shop for starters.

It's particularly exciting for me to see this first year come together. I honestly can't guess what the fastest time will/could be, as we're all going to more or less "on sight" the route this first year through. I think we're the lucky ones, getting to hit it hard for the first time.
Though I arguably know the route better than any one other person, there's still a section I haven't ridden myself... being a dad & startup business owner definitely has it's demands!

Great Start List indeed! I just updated it the other day. We still need people to register their SPOT trackers or sign up to rent one on the trackleaders site: trackleaders.com/stagecoach-signup
Like Cale's question about carpooling, we also need to figure a shuttle from/to Palm Springs airport for those who are flying in.

Regarding weather, if we continue to get the non-winter we're having it could be hot. However, for the last two years we've had "fluke" snowstorms that weekend and have about a foot of snow in the mountains. We could get anything.

Just got to unpacking some of the gear I was carrying. I found a pair of sunglasses on the trail the first day, when it was still snowing. Get in touch with me if they're yours and we'll get them out to you.

Forums / Ultra Racing / Calls from Cannon & Bruce
|

We got a phone call from Cannon yesterday as he arrived in Pinedale, WY. He sounded good, said he's having a great time. Mary gave him a rudimentary lesson on resetting the SPOT unit. ![icon_biggrin](http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/Smileys/Lots_O_Smileys/icon_biggrin.gif) This morning, Bruce Giroux called, from Butte. Sounds like he's been having a bit of a tough time dealing with rain & mud, said he was under prepared in this area but he's figuring it out... He's going to keep on keepin' on, no thoughts of giving up any time soon.

Yep, it's an actual Cross bike- a Vassago Fisticuff. He's running WTB Cross Wolf tires, 700x32 I *think* the bike will swallow a Nanoraptor in the rear if he needs to... we put a Small Block Eight on the front for a ride in Tucson and it cleared fairly well. I have a few more pics on my blog: http://sirenbicycles.wordpress.com/2009/06/06/daves-nice-visit-tour-divide-start/
Other gear as I can recall: Fred Bars, aero bars (tough to use when coasting the fixie though), some nice minimalist racks front & rear (Nashbar, I think), a big giant comfy WTB SST saddle, and a really nifty two-person GoLite singlepole tarptent. B
