21  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Anyone carry a knife? on: April 20, 2012, 07:28:17 AM
I always carry a folding knife with at least a 3" blade. As for carrying one attached to your bike and it being a concealed weapon: each State has different laws but if it is in plain view it is not concealed...As a cop for 28 years if you want to lock someone up you can always find a reason, but someone bikepacking with a knife just would  not meet the standard of Probable Cause....

I did the Huracan 300 two weeks ago and sure enough about 80 miles in my stomach problems started again. I had to drop out...I really hated doing that. I went to my doctor, who is an endurance runner and here is what he said...Just as Tony suggested he thinks it is an acid problem. He said during endurance events you are eating and drinking and acid is being pumped into the stomach to aid in digestion, but you also need blood in the stomach. Your blood is being diverted to the muscles being used to get them O2. The result is to much acid in the gut and something has to give. He gave me some Rx strength antacid. He said to start taking them about two weeks before my next event and everyday during the event. He really thinks this will help. I will keep you posted as I am planning a long ride in 3 weeks just to test the theory. Kid of sound dumb to ride to see if you get sick, but I never want to drop out of a race again...What do you guys think?

I get a little heartburn when I eat Mexican food, but other than that no problems with my stomach. I think it might be salt. During long hard rides I get crusty, white stains on my jersey, gloves and down my face. I think I need to increase my salt intake during long events. It goes against what I normally do, I try to stay away from salt. I use e-caps, but think I may need to increae the number I take or take them more often...
26  Forums / Question and Answer / Stomach Problems on: January 31, 2012, 07:59:52 AM
I have a question and hope someone can help me. While doing longer rides over 50 miles or so I get sick on my stomach. I can not drink or eat anything wihtout it going into reverse and coming up. This really sucks when you are doing a 12 hour ride and for the last 6 or so you can not drink or eat. Dehydration kicks in and makes things worse. It usually last for a few hours after stopping and then I can start drinking fluids. Milk seems to be the best drink when I can finally hold something down. Even water taste bad when this condition kicks in. I have tried water, gatorade, hammer products, nothing seems to work. I get sick and it ruins the ride or race I am in. Any ideas or has anyone else had this problem?

I already have a seat bag and gas tank from him and they work great, so it should be perfect. Greg really trys to satisfy you. I got it really quick also.

What are the best tires for the Huracan 300. I need some new ones now and would like to try what everyone thinks is best for sand and some more sugar sand. What type and size? I ride a 29er.

We are going to be shuttled to Awendaw Saturday Morning and riding to the lake about 65 to 70 miles, camping and then on Sunday we are riding around the lake utilizing the Palmetto Trail and the Dike system for another 60 miles. Two days of fun. If interested let me know and I can give more details...

That is why my wife purchased me the Venture instead of a etrex 20. The Venture came with topo maps, I just worry it is not good enough...I was thinking of trading it in for a 20 or 30 any ideas?
31  Forums / Question and Answer / Garmin GPS on: December 25, 2011, 06:20:00 AM
My wife got me a Garmin etrex Venture HC for Christmas. I was wondering should I change it for a Vista HCx or an etrex 20  or 30. I am not much of a tech geek so I need help. She says the guy at the store said this was a good unit and the 20 and 30 did not come with any maps installed. Need help fast...

The only race this year is ITT. One division only...Is the GPX file easy to follow on a GPS? Is there plenty of chances for food and water on the route?

I am planning on doing the Huracan 300 in March 2012. I have been training for a 300 mile race, but would like some ideas on how to train for a 300 mile off road race, in sand. I plan to ride without stopping to sleep, except for some quick catnaps on the side of the trail. Never done a race that long, any help would be great.

Jason, go for the 12 wheels items. I have the seat bag and gas tank and they work great. I got them in just a couple of days after I ordered them. A quality product, five stars from me....
36  Forums / Question and Answer / Tubes or not... on: November 17, 2011, 07:07:14 AM
I currently run tubes in my tires. I have been thinking of going tubeless, but after talking with friends who do they say they have to add air about every other day to keep them up. What are the Pros/Cons of tubeless? What happens when you have a flat on the trail and have to pump up the tire, can you without a air compresser? Why not just use some type of run flat tubes? Do yu have as many flats going tubeless?
I know some of these things have been covered in other post, but I cheat and look on line while at work and can't afford to go looking for fear of getting caught not working. Smiley

I know you never get to the top of a headwind, but what about altitude?

I live on the east coast, flat as a pancake. Any ideas on how to train for altitude and climbing? It is almost 6 hours to the nearest mountians.

You can take the Palmetto trail in SC from the start at BuckHall Plantation near Charleston and ride just pass Poinsett State Park. Think it is about 150 miles. Camp there and turn around and head back to BuckHall. Just Google Palmetto Trail and you can detailed maps with mile markers for these sections. Let me know if you plan a trip and I may meet up with you and ride.

Good looking set up. Hopefully I will see you at the Huracan 300. We have about 5 guys coming from South Carolina for the Huracan. All new to Ultra racing. We all come from an adventure racing background, alot of 24 hour plus races, but a lot more discplines: ie: Biking, Swimming, paddling, running....All I need is a GPS and I will be ready to go.
