Jorge, could you explain from where to where this route goes?
If I google on Transiberica, I find several different routes, e.g. from Albarracin to Lisbon (Tajo/Tejo), from near Granada to Gijon (Transespana), and from Sevilla to near Girona. Your Youtube video doesn't give many clues, perhaps except the Ciudad Encantada near Cuenca.

Although he still has to pedal some 25 miles to AW, I want to congratulate Ashley Benns for his amazing finish in somewhere between 20 and 21 days. In TD '14 he finished in 27d14h (see http://bikepackersmagazine.com/2014-tour-divide-results/).
Those Brits do very well indeed in this contest. Besides cool-blooded  and hard-nosed, I guess their self-deprecating humour carries them through. Well done Ashley!

Congratulations to Stefan Maertens, already the 6th Belgian, if my counting is right, to finish a TD race and the fastest by far. That makes it 6-0 in the Belgium-Holland game!

I don't remember this has been posted before : http://www.motorcyclenews.com/sport/tt-road-races/2016/january/video-guy-martin-talks-tour-divide/
Great guy doing the TD as a celebrity but clearly as a rookie! After finishing in much less than 20 days, he can be very proud of himself. His sideburns remind me of Sir Bradley, but his facial expression is more like Sir Richard.

... That man wasn't even out there long enough to get a respectable bikers tan!! icon_biggrin
He is from the British Isles where a tan is a disgrace for a gentleman.

Angler, thanks for the pic of Rick May. Rick was my companion on the GD in 2012, together with Ashley Benns, who is today heading for Pinedale. Rick had a malfunctioning GPS, which made him go off-route many times, and a broken pedal. He had to wait 2 days near Swan Lake for new pedals. I am glad that he is still smiling and holding the paper maps firmly in his hands.

Loved to go through that photo gallery and see the evolution in bike, gear packing and cloths.

To me it seems that the percentage TD riders with a German family name is far above the US average, at least in this gallery.

Would you believe that?

Thanks! It seems that it doesn't have a lockout. How is it riding uphill?

What's the front shox used by Rob Colliver (Reply #375), if it is one. I have never seen that before.
31  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Where to buy a bike in Europe? on: May 27, 2016, 12:21:40 AM
Buying second-hand from a private seller will take you a lot of time for visits. I also recommend to go to the Vakantiefietser shop. They have a wide choice of new travel bikes and possibly also some serviced second-hands. See http://www.vakantiefietser.nl

PS. I forgot to mention one more option. Go to the website of Wereldfietser, the club of long distance travel bikers. They have a very active Forum. Register there (free) and under the heading of 'Te koop gevraagd' post your request with all relevant details, such as size, component quality, budget, etc. You can do it in English and ask for replies in English. I wouldn't be surprised if you get a handfull of offers in a couple of days. Some Forum members may even be inspired to look for you on the Dutch ebay/craigslist called Marktplaats and add their opinion about the asking price. Try it!

Thanks to all who helped to solve the problem. First, the internet shop Ciber Locutorio on Calle Azorin, Granada, that allowed me to plug in the USB-microSD card reader and helped to translate the Spanish Windows jargon. Secondly, the WayPoint-Zuid shop in Vessem-NL that mailed me the OSM files from Southern Spain. Great service!
33  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Light rig, big tires, and lots of travelling! on: May 19, 2016, 10:44:57 AM
If you look for a basic bike with big wheels and wide tires, why not this https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-ramin-one-2015-mountain-bike-EV207300#/features
OK, it has disc brakes and I don't know about the drop-outs. But it saves you a lot of money that you can throw in for stronger wheels. I doubt if that is necessary, though, because the fatter the tires, the lesser the impact on rims and spokes. Often, heavier wheels are stronger wheels. I think they offer more colors than yellow.

Hi Endless Trails. The problem with most hotel and library computers is that they do not allow to connect a Garmin or any other device on their USB port, as a protection. I also do not have a smartphone that works with micro-SD cards.
So I need to find a shop that can do the downloading for me. I have visited many outdoor,  cycle and ict shops in downtown Granada, but without success. My poor Spanish is also a big problem. I still wait for the local bikepacker who can help me out.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, if you google 'osm map spain download', you find http://mapas.alternativaslibres.es/downloads.php
The OSM map of the Iberian Peninsula is on it.
However, technically I have never done the downloading and you need a computer with a micoSD USB for it. I don't have that here, so I need some shop or person to do it for me.
36  Forums / Question and Answer / Help with OSM map of Spain on: May 18, 2016, 03:41:17 AM
I am touring through Spain from south to north along the Spanish Divide. Currently I am in Granada. I have brought the wrong map on my Garmin. The microSD with the OSM map of Central Europe that I collected today from the post office in Granada unfortunately also contained the wrong map. Is there someone living in or near Granada who could help me with the name of a shop where to buy a microSD of Spain or who could download such an OSM map for me on a microSD?

Maybe you could backtrack parts of this guy's route http://www.mtb-news.de/forum/t/rockymountix-von-mexiko-nach-kanada.460366/ , including a hike through the Grand Canyon. Scroll through pages 16 (Flagstaff) to 44 (Fruita) to follow his trails and camps.
38  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: GDMBR: Snow in Wyoming in May?!? on: December 22, 2015, 07:32:59 AM
In northern Wyoming the GD route goes over Union Pass and Togwotee Pass which are often snow-covered at end of May.

Snow conditions change from year to year. Some areas may have more snow than usual and others less.
In 2011 the Tour Divide Race, starting in the second week of June, had probably the worst snow conditions in its history. There were detours around the Canadian Flathead, the American Flathead and around Togwotee/Union Pass, if I remember well, and  also a long snow passage in Routt NF in northern Colorado. If you take the TD-2011 route as a backup to the ACA route and decide from snowcover maps and local information which one to take, you may be able to ride the GD route from south to north without motorized transport. But be careful: it is often easier to pass over a consolidated snow cover than over freshly-cleared dirt soaked in snow melt. Sticking mud is impassable!

For the possibly blocked passes, see the chart in http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/routes/great-divide-mtb-route-in-late-april/msg71122/#msg71122

Jay, thanks. I found that one in an earlier Forum post www.bikepacking.net/forum/routes/bottom-half-of-the-transandalusia/ . It looks quite useful.
Another attractive piece is the Sistema Iberico MTB route between Cuenca and Burgos http://es.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=6905938
40  Forums / Routes / Spanish Divide? on: December 03, 2015, 06:51:26 AM
I am researching an MTB route over the Atlantic/Mediterranian divide in Spain (i.e. along the western edge of the purple area in the map). So far I have found a few MTB routes that follow a south-to-north line from Malaga to Pamplona through the rural highlands, but not one that consistently aims to track the divide. I look for a mix of small paved roads and unpaved double-tracks, not for hikers paths or goat trails. My knowledge of Spanish is too limited to effectively search for information in that language. Help with sources of information or recommended route pieces is much appreciated.
