I would say the only difference would be dealing with the cold and possibility of snow. If your planning to move quickly though then you could probably plan around a good weather window. It might actually be beneficial to be riding in colder weather instead of dealing with 85-95 degree weather which is not uncommon during August! Good luck!

Scott, I used my eTrex 20 on the TNGA and had only used one set of AA Lithium batteries for the whole trip (3 long days!), plus still had a few hours left in it after the race. I turned it off at night when sleeping but other than that it was running. It seems really easy to use and I remember riding with a few people who were getting confused at the units. I want to say they had an Edge of some sorts but not really sure.
Keeb, I'd be really interested how to see an elevation profile. Any tips?
Thanks!

The event is a GO....it is full also but I saw on Facebook they said to still sign up because about half the field will bail last minute. Might work out good for you that way....either way sign up!
The ITT plan would work I think but I know there are a lot of problems with Hunting season in the area. A lot of the route either closes or you just don't want to be out there with some of them crazies and guns! Not sure the details on that so look into it.

I just got a Sony Nex 5N Recently and am really happy with it! It has an APS-C sensor so that is a great perk! I also have a large DSLR but its just too much to carry. I am loving the small Sony. The only problem is they don't make many lenses that are that good of quality. Oh well. I have the 18-55 on it and it seems to do the job but nothing great.

Sounds awesome! Basically it sounds like riding bikes up here...moonshiners, bears, no signs on trails, hard to navigate....can't wait!
I met Steve Martine in Banff a couple weeks ago randomly at a coffee shop. Was just sitting there and a bunch of guys rolled up and he was one of them. Said he was going to be doing it again this year.
How remote is the route? Do you pass through many towns and pretty consistent intervals? Lots of places to resupply? Do most people bivy or are there motel options? I guess those are the things I mostly would like to know a little about in advance.

I have no idea what the trails/route is like! I live in Boone and have lots of mountains up here so am not worried about that....just don't really know what to expect. Is it a lot of gravel roads? single track? mix? What percentage would you say of each?

What size thread are most people using for their frame bags? I know this is a simple question but I just bought some standard nylon thread for the box store. Says its T26 and claims its Extra Strong. I noticed some folks were talking about using heavy duty thread and wondered what that meant. Thanks!

This looks awesome! I did a ride from Boone to Brevard last summer but didn't ride that extensively in the Ashville/Brevard area. Parkway/Tunnel Road into Asheville and then headed towards Bent Creek via roads. Up Gravel to Parkway, down Laurel Mountain and then somehow over to 276. Can't remember which trails but pretty much most direct route. It was about 180 miles in 3 days but we did it with support The problem with Boone to Old Fort/Asheville area is that most of the trails are illegal, which is what we ended up doing but it would be cool to try and link up something legal - TRANS NC! North of Boone is going to be a tricky one as well...

So I noticed that section missing between roughly Asheville/Old Fort area to VA. I live in Boone, NC and ride extensively in Wilson Creek area and around Highway 181 as well as some areas in NW Watauga County. There is a ton of MT biking in the area. The problem is finding trails that are legal and linking them together. I have some proposed ideas I am working on mapping out and also have done a ride from Boone to Brevard encompassing some of the Mountains to Sea trail (not allowed for bikes). There are possible ways to go without just cruising through on the Blueridge Parkway.
