I see a variety on EBay, mostly at around $110.  Some say type 3, some type 4, and others no type.  Don't know the difference.  There's a pair for $39, but not my size.

Any word on Sarah?  Looks like she was stopped for a long time around Newton, KS.
She came into Newton Bike Shop last night for food/sleep/bike work.  Woke up from her scheduled nap to find massive thunderstorms and flash flooding in the area.  Went back to sleep until things became rideable.

Geeze, this is starting to sound like TMZ with all the Guy Martin obsession.  Give the guy a break.  I don't fault anyone famous or not who would like to keep a personal challenge personal.

Ameen ...

Guy Martin is a motorbike racer and TV presenter in the UK.

Thanks Scott. That gives a great perspective to how fast they are FLYING so far this year!

On another note, is Guy Martin running tracking? Or running under a pseudonym? It would be great for us dot watchers to see his progress though I do understand he might be worried about stalkers re his semi celeb status. He is in the US and not the UK though. (Has the average American ever heard of him?)
A simple yes or no answer would be enough for me if a cloak of secrecy is required.  icon_biggrin

Pardon my ignorance but who  is Guy Martin?

interesting indeed as it looks like the 2 leaders are 40-45 mi ahead of JK's record pace of last year.
This time last year, JP was the clear leader and was setting a record pace.

Montana High Country Lodge is a bright spot on the TD route.  Very welcoming and accomodating.  Russ is the type that watches the spots and waits up for you.

I used  Sol for two TD's with a bivy bag.  I also wore my tights, long sleeve undershirt.  Added my down jacket when it got cold.  The velvro closure disintegrated quickly.  Often, I wore my windbreaker and used the SOL to wrap my feet.

Yes, the one at the Garmin link.  Mine has survived 3 TD's.  A lanyard is essential, although I've never had mine pop off except once when I hadn't 'clicked' the GPS back in all the way.  My lanyard is basically small nylon cord.

Every SPOT SOS I've heard of on TD has been received and S&R or other agency deployed. <snip>

fwiw: I also used the SPOT SOS function during the 2014 TD, while in the Great Basin of WY.  Good accuracy and prompt response by Sheriff's Deputy.  When you watch the SPOT tracker plots or on Trackleader, the accuracy looks pretty good when plotted against a map and your known positions.

I used the Gen1 or 2? in 2013 and 2014, then the Gen3 in 2015.  The tie down points make it really easy to find a spot on your body to attach.

Don't know why not.  That's what I'm tenatively planning to do in June as an ITT.  There will be arguments and discussion about prevailing winds, etc. but going into the Western U.S.  towards the end doesn't bother me.

Question to the Vets of 2015, there is a new section just past Elkford, BC. After the climb out of town you turn right on to a dirt road or is it single track? Whats this like? All rideable or is there HAB sections in there and is it longer or shorter than before? Also, does anyone have the cues for this?

Thanks!

Phil

Here's an extract from an email sent out in Spring 2015 in advance of TD2015, regarding all known alternates.  Doesn't mean this info will be 100% accurate for 2016, but it's a start.

Phil,

Try this link from last year.   https://goo.gl/L3O1Nn

You'll find a narrative as well as a google map.  This is more than enough info to get you through.

Basically, you head out of Elkford on 43 as if you're going on the original route.  After a few (uphill) miles, you turn right on Fording River Rd, also on the original route.  After a couple of miles, you start the alternate on what starts out as dirt road towards Josephine Falls.  Not real well marked, but the narrative is accurate.  It looks like it was/is used for some logging.   Follow this dirt road in, watch your odometer.  When you get to about the distance, per the narrative, you'll see a narrow single track trail take off to the right, initially pretty steeply up.  then it single tracks for a while.  (if you get all the way to the Josephine Falls lookout, you went too far). Whether it's rideable or not depends on the rider.  I stumbled along and did a little of both.  The single track only lasts a few miles.  Then you spit out onto another dirt road which heads south.  It improves as you go along.  A few more miles and you rejoin Fording River Rd.

Once you see where things are, you can see the trail and follow along on Google Earth.  It's way easier than my description

Good Luck,

If you look in the Questions and Answers topic, you'll find an entire thread devoted to Dynamos and Lighting, or a similar title.

http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/question-and-answer/hub-dynamo-and-electronics-thread/

That will go a long way in educating you without a lot of repetition.

Anyone tried the new Lithium Ion Rechargeable batteries in the spots?
Yes.  Amazon brand.  They lasted as well or better than non-rechargeables.

The book is kind of dead weight unless you are super into birding.
It's an interesting pre-read, though.
