That's one reason we collect people's cell #'s. Most riders seem to check their phones out there these days.
The rest is up to the magic of one Matthew Lee. His seven (right?) years on the divide (plus 6 or 7 more running the race) means he knows many folks that live or work (managers, etc) along the route. Right now, for example, there is a message for all riders at the Platoro Lodge about the reroute.
Loading up the fire perimeters layer on the tracker I'm concerned about the fire SW of Pie Town, and the multiple fires getting very close to the Geronimo Trail in the Gila.
Here's a website with some additional information on the "Corral" fire, which is getting pretty close to Black Canyon Campground and the route. https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/unit/3178/EDIT: LOVE the fire layer on the TrackLeaders site!! I had never messed with the Layers before.

Unfortunately I don't think any amount of rear facing light would save you from some drivers at night. One thing the internet has taught me is to not be surprised at the stupidity of the general public. Riding a race on relatively major public roads exposes a rider to a much broader spectrum of the general population which equals a higher risk factor. The TD is largely on back roads and as an example one of the "major" roads it used to traverse was into Rawlins on the southern edge of The Basin. As far as I know several riders were struck and many more rattled on this short, but bustling section of race trail. The reroute through Wamsutter has removed the danger of this particular section but in any of these Ultra Endurance type races you can't remove the racer from the race. Riders will push themselves on these busy roads and perhaps prioritise speed over safety. I am no hard arse (ass) and wish to pass my condolences to those who have lost loved ones. Mike H was on one of "our" roads, so his loss was particularly painful to us bikepackers in Oz.
Exactly! I try to avoid busy streets/roads at all costs, but when I do ride them, I always assume drivers are somehow distracted. I'm constantly looking behind me, waving my hands, using a taillight...anything to garner attention. Bright flashing lights and reflective clothing are the best things I can do, but even more important is a "situationally aware" driver that isn't goofing with their GPS or sending text messages.

How much additional mileage is there with the reroute in northern New Mexico? How is everyone notified?
I did re-calcs of my GPX files and, if MapMyRide is to be believed, the fire re-route adds 16 miles and just over 300' of additional climb to the route. Of course, the biggest loss is the Canon Plaza Store, but depending on the fires, Sylvia and her family may have other concerns right now.

And Indiana appears to be tackling Engineer Pass as I type. Yeah, it will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next couple of days.

Ok, I really appreciate the effort that has gone into maintaining this space.... I am also really grateful for the access it provides me to some OG members of this community...(: (Hi gang!!) I keep my login current in order to not lose touch w folks....(: That said, this ongoing banter about the location of and preference for where pictures are posted...when there is an exciting race happening out there....(?) Well, it doesn't inspire forum excitement from here! I was asked by ML many MANY years ago to post photos elsewhere, due to the space they were consuming on the forum servers. So, as for many years now, I am posting my photos on my Lodge FB page... https://m.facebook.com/BrushMountainLodge/Go there, don't go there.... I don't care! Happy stalking, people!! My earlier comment regarding FB may have been a little too harsh...I apologize for any offense I caused. While it is true that I will never join Facebook, that's not to say I've never used it. Sometimes FB is the only site a place has, so I will go. There are numerous cycling communities - including the Brush Mtn Lodge pages - I have visited. And while I don't have an account, I can get an idea of what's happening. But until it's no longer here, this will always be my first stop. Back to the cycling... Brian is headed up Indiana Pass...I'm not sure what the last known state was...snow-free or no?

Read that Imogene Pass is scheduled to open around July 4th.
So can these guys ride/hike/carry their bikes over it if it is officially closed?
Yeah, I would reiterate that question? Dylan has just 3 passes left before arriving in Ouray to tackle Imogene, so I'm guessing he'll be there Thursday at the latest. Will he - and eventually Indiana - be allowed to go over? I don't know exactly how that works. Are there gates blocking the way?...is it go-at-your-own-risk?...will they be forced to re-route?

Looks like Brian had no trouble finding the Gold Dust trail turnoff. I wonder how many will blast by, then have to climb back up Boreas to it? He seems to have a comfortable buffer over Josh now but there is still a loong way to go. Great to see some huge solo efforts going into this race. It must be hard riding alone at these high intensity levels. Definitely! JayP's ride has been remarkable...he's up to 8th in the Grand Depart rankings. And Maertens has been outstanding as well...to say nothing of the battle between Lucido and Kato. Great stuff all around.

You are not alone. All that one can hope for is that annoyances such as Facebook, Tweets, Hashtags, Triggers, Fantasy Leagues, YouTube (fill in the blank) Challenges, and the Kardashians will ultimately go the way of MySpace, Milli Vanilli, Dancing Babies, Clippy, CB Radios (wait - what??), Livestrong Wristbands and high ranking Nigerian officials. Looks as if Bicycles are here to stay. Hopefully this upsets somebody! My Mood Ring says that I'm OK. Amen to that!

Anybody else seeing what's happening in northwest WY and Togwotee Pass? Things are starting to get interesting in the lead pack. SM and BS are making their moves.
It appears that the leaders will be the snow plows to Brooks Lake. I wonder what Union Pass will bring... Stefan will get some consideration for "ride of the Tour".

Staying at High Country Lodge last night was part of Brian's strategy to give the Bannack bench more drying time. Looks like it worked in his favor.
Indeed it has! Brian is now on the Medicine Lodge road and looks to be moving nicely there, too.
