It's very reliable. When my great grandmother did the AZT that how she did it, she mailed stuff because she wasn't tough enough to carry it from the border. But she's frail, so nobody thought any less of her accomplishments.
^lol say you arrive late friday afternoon you would have to wait to monday morning to get your stuff

I did Gold Canyon last year without a .gpx track only waypoints for trail heads (thanks Tim) and it only became difficult/impossible near the end to make it easier, the official track could just take the most direct route on the main road/trail for the last mile and it would get rid of 90% of the navigation troubles or just have a free for all, any track'll do for the very west portion, with no relegation asterisks

Some running events have an age graded/weighted calculation. http://fairmodel.econ.yale.edu/aging/nyt1.pdfhttp://www.runscore.com/Alan/AgeGrade.htmlFor example for marathons add approximately 0.6% per year over 35 years old (but less than 55 years old) to the overall winners time (and add exponentially greater time per year for those over 55 years old). You would basically graph a line showing the result of the World Record holder and how he/she would get slower over the years of aging, providing that athlete kept training and preparing equally to when he/she became the record holder. So by using that formula we as individuals can compare our result to that formula/graphed line and estimate what our time would be if we were younger. For example a 75 year old finishing in twice the time of the World Record holder would be an amazing achievement, but finishing in five times the record time would still be amazing but would not be considered to be fast. You can further modify the formula for being female, under 21 years old, one-legged, on a unicycle etc. No recognition would be reported for how individuals compare to this formula, it would just be for the entertainment of Spot Stalkers and a personal (privately recognized) carrot for racers (with the exception of if that 75 year old racer is above the formula/line, then it that case (or similar case), it should be noted by the ultra race community)

sometimes following Rule #1 is tough "Ride 100% of the route"
in the BC Epic 1000 the gpx route clearly leaves the rail trail and takes a longer route on campground roads at one point; however, the race organizer says the route is the rail trail for the AZTR the gpx route clearly leaves the signed and marked AZT just before the Oracle Underpass, in many other places the gpx seems to randomly wander through the bush and does not follow the one and only possible trail, and in other places due to forest fires and fallen trees no route is visible
so no matter what route you pick, someone else will say you chose wrong and should be relegated

Seems like a lot of trouble to come all this way to NOT do the race. it's still racing what is the official route of an unofficial race? TS or GM or whoever can maintain their anonymity, race the best they are capable of, and have somewhat of a ruler to take into account weather and trail conditions by comparing to the times of the group start racers, whoever it is does not care what the rest of the world thinks, they are on their own personal quest and do not want to share
