cool, and thanks. i might add a switch, going to wire it up in parallel tonight and give it all a go. used a buddy's setup to run a gopro last year - worked great (no light...)

I have the Revo with the USB werks. Wired in parallel and it works great. Silicone the back of the connection to prevent water intrusion. I ran the wires up my fork tube together in heat shrink and have the cache battery on my handle bars underneath a feed bag strap. I have charged my cell phone galaxy 4s and garmin 810 using the USB werks and charging was quick and steady. Thanks to PW cylces for helping me get it set up. With 810 I had to get a specific USB cable for charging. The cable that it comes with for data transfer will shut down the GPS when plugged into a straight power source.

Do you switch off / unplug the light while charging?

I will likely do the same with my cables and just leave the usbwerk cable on the bike when I'm not running the dyno or light (can't imagine why I can't just leave everything on there).

Did you silicone the plugs to the back of the light? I was looking for end caps that might work - haven't going anything yet.

I bought a right angle cable. I think the extrex will stay on with just a power source. Will have to check now!
343  Forums / Bikepacking / Re: Any suggestions for a long lasting backup battery for recharging devices. on: April 15, 2014, 08:11:02 PM
i ran my gopro and a garmin gps (not at the same time) off a SON and a USBwerk.
sitting on my desk I have a limefuel 600mah pack that i bought specifically to use as an expanded buffer battery.
i have not tested it yet... but will give it a go next week.

it supports 'pass through' charing - meaning it can charge a device while being charge - something i wanted the option of on the bike.

do a search for the electronics thread. lots of good information there.

Good luck on AZT!
And thanks for the links...

Got my first dark ride in on the Revo this morning. Impressed.

thats pretty sweet yogi... i like that dashboard light running out of the output. might have to think about how to do that... i use a little petzl e+ light for that sort of thing, in red. was thinking about picking up the little red light that exposure sells and making a cable for it.

did you shorten the stock Revo cable? do you know what cable they use (same as you list above for your mod - do you have a part number on the cable)? I want to add a quick disconnect and some length to the redeye taillight i'm running out of the output, but don't want to slice anything until i know what i'm getting into. i am thinking of picking up the gold plated quick connectors from sine wave or peter white (supernova parts).

thanks for sharing. awesome mods.

self employed, (unemployable, really). designer, sometimes craftsman of heavy timber buildings.

primarily a dad right now, business is taking a bit of a back seat as we navigate 2 kids starting school.
but, still working what some folks call 'full time' - just in off and odd hours.

and, volunteer vp on a non profit board. that takes it out of you!

after righting that all out it makes perfect sense why my bike time is down over the last 4 years.
hmmmm.

Screw the rack. Get a seat pack.

Second that.

Well, sure, maybe just not red bull / go pro downhill.

We did some really steep up / down on Pugsleys last fall. That terra cycle mount and my Dinotte didn't budge, even bunny hopping some stuff at speed fully loaded.

I'm runing a dyno and Revo on my Fargo:

for now it will ride on the bars. i think it will be workable as is for light loads - but the moment i slip a jacket or map under my revelate harness i'll be in trouble. i've got aerobats for it, so it will go on a homemade bridge, or it will ride on that FSA clamp I pictured above, lifting the light up a few inches to clear all the crap i can carry.

FWIW, a small Mark's rack with a coupler nut and the spare rack hardware will work too.

and if you have a mid fork eyelet, you can make a small mount with a star nut and piece of tubing:

minoura makes a bunch of stuff too, i just added a mount that fits on the steerer tube (above or below the bars). this is to keep my floppy h-bar bag off my cables / light on my rando machine:

I wouldn't trust any kind of clamp-on attachment over rough terrain.

The terracycle mount I linked to above has worked well on 2 bikes. Dirt road / gravel bike and the Pugsley. The last trip on the Pugsley was fully loaded and an overland trail / hike / bike / singletrack / dirt road trip.

I wouldn't put it on a downhill rig. But for singletrack that you tackle while loaded I give it a thumbs up.

The mount can use an eyelet or comes with clamps.

i run a terra cycle mount on my puglsey: http://t-cycle.com/accessory-mounting-c-71/accessory-mounts-c-71_73/?zenid=k0akbaqpekt6efiov7i8iq3sp3

i just snagged one of these:

other options out there. raise it up off the bars and get the light to point clear of the sling / roll / harness.

waiting on some stick on brake cable guides to finalize wiring - but got things wired close enough with tape and zip ties to test for 5 minutes tonight. am reworking my road machine too, waiting on some paul racer medium brakes on that one, but added a wired tail light that runs with my edeluxe and son hub.

the stable, (wife's bike is hanging in the basement for the winter... still):

stand lights working:

have not wired the usb werk yet.
really like the idea of a switch to toggle between light-off-charge - but don't have the electric skills to pull it off.
might order up a separate cable for the revo and have one mated in parallel (at the hub connection) to the light / usbwerk, and the other light only.

really have to deal with the lack of adjustment on the reedye. its pointing slightly down now. would love it pointed level, and i will likely have to move it to the seat stay when my rear bag is on... so i'm probably going to fab something to bolt to the eyelet on my fargo.

might test out the usbwerk and my garmin tomorrow on a short road ride - but fairly certain the stem mount on the garmin won't let me keep the usb plugged in... looking at right angle plugs here:

very nice so far! no ride on it yet, pissing down cold and windy rain right now. have the wires taped on, but I'll need to do something nicer eventually. and i don't get what they are thinking with the tail light. am going to 3d print some sort of shim to get it at the right angle. not sure its going to work on the seat post once my bag goes on, so i'l have to look for an alternate location, which means rigging up a holder for it.

Etrex will run on dynamo and you have options on batteries for night running or if your charger fails. But I know a couple of Randonneurs using dynos and the 800s with good success.
356  Forums / Ultra Racing / Re: GPS for Ultra Racing on: April 03, 2014, 11:59:05 AM
etrex 20. could have gotten the 30... works well enough for my needs (no 'racing').
power it with batteries that you can find just about anywhere.

Snagged this online and it arrived today!!'

 headbang headbang headbang

And this:

Have the RedEye matching light coming for the Revo. Tired of batteries!

Damn, what the F did Flickr do? That was painful. Took away the BBCode code?
WTF!

Oh. There is is, convoluted to get it.

358  Forums / DIY / Make Your Own Gear (MYOG) / Re: How can I cover my front light so I don't get caught? on: March 11, 2014, 01:27:38 PM
if we knew what light it was we'd have a better chance of solving the problem.

with all dyno lights i've used that have a stand light - adding a switch inline won't help - the stand light battery is in the light head... not in the dyno.

so, you could turn the light off 10-15 minutes early, and the stand light battery will eventually power down.
this assumes that you have a switch on your light (as all the lights i've used have had 'senso', on, and off settings.

but, like i said, without knowing the light, its kind of silly to speculate round and round and round about switches and stuff.

what light is it? how is it powered? is this a stand light on a dyno driven light?

You should have length options for both summer and winter...
And you need to use 'other' for insulate air core (like a big agnes...)
