I get round coffee pot filters and either make a tea bag  er coffee bag out of them, or if I have a rubber band I put it on the top of my cup and poor hot water through it.
Avoid plastic coffee presses.
Switch to green tea... .. really

I once found a piece of string and a couple of old cans.  I tied one end to a spoke, and the cans inside my tent. I was awakened in the middle of the night by the rattling cans.  I unzipped to find a crack head with a hand held cable cutter working on my thin cable.  I told him I had a flat tire so he would stop.  My two German friends had level 15 security, Abus locks, he left their bikes alone.  The beer guzzling loud mouth on the other side of the campground lost his bike.
My bike was saved with a piece of string; or, I observed my surroundings and took extra precaution.
I wonder if the Germans told the story of my level 1 security system when they got home?

386  Forums / Question and Answer / 29er tires in San Diego? who sells them? on: November 18, 2009, 12:46:36 PM
How to buy wtb tires in San Diego.  I'm just wondering if while I'm in Baja, and all of a sudden I need a tire, (Surprise),  they would probably arrive more quickly if ordered from San Diego. Here in the North West 29er tires aren't always easy to get.   Seattle bike shop employees refuse to accept the term "29er" as a real word.  Portland bike shops may have a tire, but not the one I want.  They are willing to order without a grammer lesson, un like Seattle shops hoping to correct my evil ways and get me a pencil thin tire, (yuck).

If i need a wtb weirwolf lt 29 x 2.55 tire all of a sudden, who keeps them in stock close to the border with Baja?

Bike packer spell check does not accept 29er as a word either.

I had good luck with a eureka bag before http://www.eurekatent.com/ I live in the north west where it rains a lot, so no feathers for me.  I tried a mt hardware feather bag, was not pleased. Eureka seems ok for a budget bag

Thanks Mr Efuentes.  While speedy Gonzales laughs at me for having to heavy of a load, I will be lugging a three day supply of water.  What is the name of the mouse with the piece of cheese? Slow poke Rodriguez?  They say the bad tasting Barrel cactus will keep people without water alive.
People that don't drink alcohol seem to favor La Paz, and the easy life style of BCS.

I think most roads are gravel, hard pack, lose rocks, etc.  Sand must be expected as well.  I think some of the roads I'll take are from the 16th century.  With little maintenance since then.  there are lots of trails, few mapped.  only one highway, Mex-1.

Any one ever been to Baja?  Know anything about Baja.  Baja maps aren't the best, the ones I can find anyway.
Spending January in Baja should solve my rain gear problem.  Whats the best way to strap 3 galloons of water to the bike.  Getting the wearwolf lt 2.55 might solve the sand problem.   I won't be hanging around any place close to the border at all.  If any one has been to the south half of Baja, whats up?

I'm hoping some one else has ever thought Sierra de la Giganta Sounded like a good place to spend a month, (January).  I found 3 maps, the roads on these maps do not match up. I found a 1981 book by Bonnie Wong about cycling the Baja 1000.

Perhaps Baja is a little explored frontier,  sounds fun.

Hey Mr Efuentes
What do you know about Baja.  Are there any resources to help me wonder the back roads of southern Baja for a month or so?
392  Forums / Question and Answer / lights? what is the best? on: October 30, 2009, 03:32:22 PM
How can I find my way in the dark?  I've only fallen of the side of a mountain a couple of times, because of my cheap skate lights nono  You know how it is man.  Sometimes it's hard to find a flat spot to camp, or maybe 3,000 means meters not feet, takes longer when that happens.
I thought this year I would get some good lights. What kind?
Last year I nearly fell from a cliff.  My back tire slid out from under me, scrape, new bruise on knee.  I picked the bike back up, mumbled something, picked up the thing I dropped, noticed I could still hear the sound of rocks falling,  cold, chilling sound from far below.
What kind?  which one? how many? 2 hours of light is about useless.  Are several lights better than one big one?
393  Forums / Bikepacking / Re: Best wet weather gear ? on: October 23, 2009, 03:56:59 PM
Cheap solid rain coat.  Some fabric is more water resistant than others.  Water proof fabric does not exist.
Portland meter maids ride through the winter, they wear gortex, say it doesn't hold up.  Seattle police ride through the winter, they said they tried everything, still searching for something that works.  Wool helps, I like my Icebreaker shirt a lot.  Get socks with high wool content, 87% perhaps.  50%, 60%, = cold feet.  If you are in an actual race, you must suffer, so you can arrive 1 minute quicker.  The other 99.99% of bike rides must take hypothermia seriously, it kills.  Get a real rain coat, unless you can build a fire from wet wood with a trembling hand.

If your not particular about the color they sometimes have a very good deal, check back now and then.

Any one tried heat sealable fabric.  I made a "fender bag" for my sleeping bag and mat. If you ask, Seattle Fabric will send an old article from a boat mag on building a dry bag.  I used some straps for backing when I made it.

Some places like Jo Ann fabrics offer sewing classes for $40.00. First lesson, Rain pants.

Flashpacking

Flashpacking is a neologism used to refer to affluent bikepacker. Whereas bikepacking is traditionally associated with budget travel and destinations that are relatively cheap, flashpacking has an association of more disposable income while traveling and has been defined simply as backpacking with a bigger budget.[11]

A simple definition of the term Flashpacker can be thought of as bikepacking with flash, or style. One school of thought defines the flashpacker as a rapidly growing segment of travelers who adhere to a modest accommodation and meal budget, while spending freely, even excessively, for activities at their chosen destination. Another school of thought defines flashpacking as an incongruous mix of 'slumming it' and luxury; of adventurous travel with those on a budget by day and sedate dining and comfortable accommodation by night.[12] Flashpackers have been further defined as tech-savvy adventurers who often prefer to travel with a cell phone, digital camera, iPod and a laptop,[13] although none of these is required in order to be a flashpacker. As with other forms of travel, the term flashpacker is mainly one of self-identification. The origin of the term itself is obscure.
I pasted this from somewhere. Changed back to bike.
Your budget determines how light you go.  Some buy every thing they need with a credit card, some bring every thing they need.
Couple of days ago I meet two guys on the discovery trail.  One had a jumbo sized army pack, the other a day pack.  one slept with a sleeping bag and a tarp, the other used a tent and army poncho as rain fly.

Anyone know how to deal with leg cramps?  After pedaling all day, heat up a can of beans at dusk, then crawl into a nice warm sleeping bag, Zzz.  2 hours later, RRR sharp pain in inner thigh, or perhaps lower front of leg.  muscle throbbing cannot relax. Next to impossible not to scream out loud.  15 minutes gone buy leg relaxes, back to sleep. 1 hour later same again in other leg.

topeak stuff is not fancy or expensive.  It frequently does what it says it does, (unusual).  My last topeak rack survived being hit by a car, falling from the side of a hill, .. ... etc.  At the end of a 5,000 journey  my stuff was still there.  after the car hit me, I had to stand on it and bend it back, it survived.

maybe I'll find a tubus airy somewhere, hmmm

An ugly paint job does more to stop a thief than a $200 lock.  In small towns ask the librarian or the store clerk, "will my bike be safe here?" they know if anything has gone missing in the last few years.   A full size bolt cutter can cut a cable as thick as the knuckle on your thumb, so a thin cable will do.
