Forums / Question and Answer / Re: who has had good luck with solar panels?

I have both, although both are relatively new to me and I’m still working it all out. Charging the iPhone direct with the panel is problematic for the reason you state. For both systems, a battery is key. One problem (1st world problems, I know) is that I only have a dynamo for one bike, and I have multiple. That might not be a consideration for you. Given the choice I’d take the dynamo almost every time. Another factor is that the solar panel can used for non-bike activities.

Well sorry...tried posting photos with no successs. Tried using photos hosted on MTBproject but that didn’t work. Tried posting straight from my pad but the size was too large, so will have to figure this out.
Anyway, I’ve done some dirt road tours and some road tours, but have never tried touring on more technical single track. Loaded up my new (to me) Mukluk with two days worth of gear and drove up to South Lake Tahoe. Rode up Horse Meadow Rd. and up to Armstrong pass, up to Freel Pass and down to Star Lake. About 10 miles 2500ft and just over 3 hours. A fair amount of walking, but still fun and plenty of time to lounge at Star Lake, set up camp, and cook dinner and go for another short ride up toward Monumnet pass.
Next day I dropped down Star lake trail, down High Meadows Rd, across to incense Cedar trail, up Sierra Sidewinder, and on up Armstrong trail back up to the pass, and back down the road to the car. About 2500 ft straight down and 2500 ft back up a 10 mile climb, and about a 5h ride, 22 miles total. Super fun and almost completely all rideable even with the loaded bike.
Super fun weekend and I can’t wait to try bigger things...and hopefully figure out how to get some pictures loaded.

I have used my 520 for turn by turn. That combined with my phone and a paper map have gotten me by, but it is far from ideal. My 520 is only good for 2 days, I haven't taken a cache battery with it. I picked up a used etrex and I am still figuring this out.
