41  Forums / Ultra Racing / Sleeping in shitboxes? on: March 29, 2021, 12:17:24 PM
I was scanning through a recent race trip report and got stuck on the fact that this racer stopped and slept in a public restroom mid-race.

I know this has happened in the past.  I gathered from this recent TR tho that it's become common.  Maybe even acceptable?

What I want to know is if any larger discussion has ever happened on the ethics of the practice?

Could someone point me to that discussion so that I can 'catch up'?

Thanks.

When it comes to tire/rim width in snow, tis better to have and not need than to need and not have.
43  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Are 28 spokes enough for 29+ rim on: August 12, 2020, 10:51:46 AM
28 will likely be fine for a few years.  32 will distribute the load better, for longer.

The weight of 4 extra spokes per wheel is inconsequential.  But a broken spoke -- or several -- is real.

Potentially the biggest difficulty is finding a suitable route for bikes.  Roads are few and trails are nil.  You have to get really creative, and knowing people that live and travel in your desired area of exploration helps.

Here's a good one:

PRICE DROPPED.

Size 47.

I ordered these for myself.

They sent the wrong size.

It is easier to just pass these along and re-order than to go through the rigamarole of getting a call tag and sending them back, then waiting for them to be replaced.

There are two versions of these: 2017/18, and 2019.

This is the 2019 version.

Never been removed from the box.

$350 is retail.  Selling this set for $200 shipped.

Don't delay:  info@lacemine29.com

The Reverend and I recently spent a few nights out where it didn't seem any others were.

The travel was challenging yet rewarding.  The scenery ranged from bucolic to sublime.

Probably not ideal for gravel roads, but if you ride *trail* this bike might be a quiver killer.

And the rougher that trail is, the more this bike shines.

Do you already have wheels?  If so, how wide are the rims?

That sort of dictates how wide you can go on tires.

how do you remove the cassette without any tools? Could you elaborate on that? Thanks.

I know. It's going to be hellish I expect.

Which part?  Having a car follow you on a "bikepack" trip?

56  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Rear racks on hardtails - why don't people use them? on: September 30, 2019, 12:35:59 PM
I always opted for a rear rack for the GDR and other bikepack races -- even if we didn't call 'em that yet.  Proponents of the uber-sized seatbags tout their lower system weight and lower likelihood of failure.  And they're right on both.  What they don't factor in is the time spent stuffing/unstuffing them.  I liked the rack/bag system because it was so easy to get everything in/out, easy to keep things organized, easy to strap stuff to the top of it (like a rain shell, when I was overheating but could already see the next storm bearing down on me) for quick access or to dry it out.

I prefer racks for winter tours too -- so much more insulation to manage that it's tough to cram it all into a seatbag.

Have you had an opportunity to use it?
Suitable for someone 6 ft 2 ?
I don’t see mention on the site is there a pole solution if you’re cycling and not carrying trekking poles?
Thanks

I've got 20+ days in it since March.

If you're 6'2" it'll work but you'll need to be at least a bit diagonal in it to keep from brushing head or feet.

I use trekking poles when I take it on backpacking trips, a breakdown paddle when on the river, and carbon extend-o-poles when on the bike.

I thought I remembered reading that they were going to provide poles at some point, but haven't kept up with that since I figured out my own.

Not sure I mentioned how easy it is to pitch.  Having used other tents and 'mids for the past ~decade I'd sort of gotten used to needing more time and focus to pitch.  This thing goes up really quick and with no ambiguity.

Really quality piece of kit.

2019 update: HMG Dirigo tent.  https://www.hyperlitemountaingear.com/products/dirigo-2-ultralight-backpacking-tent

Palatial for one, comfy for two.  Sub 2# with full bug mesh, bathtub floor, and 2 vestibules.

Downside?  Spendy.  Seems like the really good stuff often is.
60  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Which wheels? on: August 12, 2019, 10:48:31 PM
The HED rims are pretty fragile for anything other than soft snow.  I'd unlace that set -- or sell them to someone that wants that combo -- and lace something for 3-season use.

Also, I think 50mm is too wide for 3" tires, unless you *really* need the float.  And, since you'll have the 26" x fat wheelset, you can use those to float and the other set for firmer surfaces.

I prefer 40mm rims for 3" tires, although if you're bigger/heavier 45mm is OK too.
