The stove takes up room... so, can you fit a stove, fuel, etc. along with any extra food?

I've made a bunch. This was one of the most refined. I now use an MSR Windburner. Happy with the alky stove in the summer, but shoulder seasons or wind make them harder to use.

Like the Thumb tabs (TAB?) on Mikes bars.  No limits to personal customization.
love them...

Jones Loop, add some hinged TOGs, and wrap the bars, makes for comfy alternative position...

yes, make a leash. no need for metal, just a piece of cord, pass it trough, tie a loop, make it long enough to loop around bars and pass the gps through before sliding into the clip:

I'm also considering which one to buy.

For me it's important to have a google maps on my blog that can locate me with an update  once of twice a day. Even if it's not google maps but I want people that will read my blog to be able to follow me.

Do any of the two devices allow this?

SPOT allows for a share page - not sure if you can embed the actual page - but you can setup a map page that you can link to. You can also tweet and FB updates out (I don't).

And I just saw they have 3rd party forwarding - it looks like you can forward your coordinates to a 3rd party GPS / mapping site... so that may work well for what you want to do.
47  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Hub dynamo and electronics thread. on: January 04, 2017, 12:14:07 PM
It really should work like any other device, its just a battery...
48  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Hub dynamo and electronics thread. on: January 03, 2017, 05:37:25 PM
Does it charge via USB? Then likely yes, if you get enough power to it during daylight hours. 2 batteries would likely make the entire course, so charging might be for insurance.

Note the hub won't charge anything without the right intermediary - USBwerk or similar needs to be used to get the power to the battery.

I've charged my Exposure Diablo, a GoPro, run my etrex20, iPhone, and a Limefuel battery. Not all at once, but they all charge or run via USB.
49  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Multitool/Pliers That Can Actually Cut A Spare Cable on: January 01, 2017, 08:00:55 AM
Or bring two, full length cables that you can just wrap and zip tie the excess into a little loop. You have a spare if the same cable breaks twice, and you can hand one off to someone in need if you want.

FWIW, I have 2 full length brake cables tucked into the space between the stiffener and favric in a Revelate Jerry Can that pretty much always stay in the home (Bb7s). When I mount the Rohloff I put 2 shift cables in the other side.

I plan to do the following, if I ever get around to it, and if I ever felt the swaying was holding me back, or if I could notice it...

Get a seatpost rack mount,

and then get some Tubus spare parts, and make a stabilizer...

The struts can be bought bent, etc. or you can bend them yourself.
I used these for a decaleur for my randonneuring bike.

I'll tuck the struts inside the flaps on my Revelate Visacha...

Compass that doesn't work without batteries would be a deal breaker for me as backup gear. If the device is running you will likely have full functionality unless you don't get sat registration. If SHTF I'd want an analog compass. My .02$

Gossamer gear makes a couple - I have one for my iPhone that I use on an osprey talon.

Is Porcelain Rocket still making these? Nothing comes up on their website.

Doesn't look like they are making them anymore...

I use mine for cold weather when my sleep kit takes up more space.
And so I can minimize back weight.

Last trip I used them they held cook kit on one side and extra camp clothes, trail saw, toilet / personal med kit, etc. on the other.

I'm a fan of my porcelain rocket anything bags. Integrated straps. Solid.

The Minoura worked fine but doesn't tighten up as much as you'd like. I ended up putting my Marks rack back on and that keeps my Swift randonneuring bag secure or it keeps the harness off the cables / etc.

I built a decaleur for my bag using a different Minoura mount that does tighten up. Here's a pic of the roughed out decaleur that I 3D printed and before I finalized things.

Have you tried it yet? Probably more valuable than 20 opinions on a forum.
My Jones are about an inch lower than saddle. It's all I know but it's all I ride.
58  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Disc Brakes for front a bad idea for touring? on: October 17, 2016, 07:20:57 PM
I ran disc up front on my Soma SS until I could put the coin together for a rear wheel... worked fine... I'd do the same with my road / gravel rig if I rode it more...
59  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: How many of you use a backpack on: October 16, 2016, 06:15:07 PM
(see my disclosure)

I got into trail running, and started out with a small Osprey MTB pack, which destroyed my lower back with scrapes and scratches, so I ditched that thing for a running vest. My favorite one for bikepacking is the Ultimate Direction Peter Bakwin Adventure Vest. If you don't need it, you can stuff it in its own pocket, and pack it away - it's small enough to fit into a jersey pocket.

This is what I used for my 14er project, which was, you know: a ton of hiking/running. Ultimate Direction was into that project so much, I'm now an ambassador for them (and please use that as full disclosure!).

For a 15L capacity, the thing is less than a pound. Tons of places to put things like water, food, phone, etc. Lots of pockets up front so you don't have to take the thing off to grab it. Lots of ventilation areas so that you're not sweating out because of wearing it. I've done multiday trips with it, with stuff sacks tied to it's exterior.

I'm amazed that people aren't bikepacking with this particular vest more, rather than those tiny little backpacks like my original Osprey. I dare say I'd ever go back. Until UD brings out a bikepacking-specific pack, this is absolutely the best choice to use, in my opinion.

I've been doing more hiking and even some limited trail running / fast hiking and man I can see the potentials of the vest. Totally sold as soon as I can spend the $$ - have sort of wished for a fly fisherman style bikepacking vest for awhile... before I knew this was a thing.

occasional use here, super convenient for some stuff, nice having weight on the body for some types of riding and less on the bike, nice for keeping quick access stuff quick to access...
