Give me more info on your definition of road VS trail.
I also like the idea of the Cutthroat and when I lived in the Midwest it would have been perfect. Now that I'm back in Montana I think I'll prefer more of a mtb as a base for the bike. But that is only because of my access to more singletrack.
I've ridden the Tour Divide Route from Banff to Helena and the Cutthroat is perfect for those fire roads and pavement.
What types of routes are in your future?

Funny you bring that up as I was looking at the Cutthroat gearing a few hours ago. I saw the same thing. I'd hope that you could replace that cassette to one with a low of 42 or 46. By memory, i think the 1x version of the Cutthroat had a 46 as the low rear cassette.
When I road portions of the route, i was on a 32x46 for my low gear, it was mostly fine. The few times that I walked were a welcome change from the pedaling. I wasn't in the best shape at that part of my life.

Do your research on the 1120. I like the idea of that bike but have seen reports of breaking racks and mounting points. No experience with it.
I'd love a Cutthroat, but enjoy riding on singletrack and steeper grades, so mtb gearing works best for me. Really examine your riding locations and style, that will help pinpoint a bike style.

Most of the hub failures that I remember (past years races) have been SP. I'd go with a SON if I did it.
The pointy end of the field will sleep 2-4hrs a night, especially early on. Backwards math is that it is light from 6am to 10pm (some light prior and after). That leaves 8hrs of darkness. If you have a light that can run 4-6hrs a night with limited recharging, or from a battery pack, or from the limited stops in towns, then you'd be ok. The full moon would help, especially when remote (haven't checked that calendar).
I think a person could easily go without a dynamo hub, but has to be diligent about charging at every opportunity. Having a dynamo relieves you of the stress and you just ride.

Gun, no. Bear spray, yes.
Is it sufficient? Only as the last resort.
#1, is common sense. No food in bed, eat in one spot and ride down the road to sleep. Hang your food overnight. Don't bring smelly items, or at least hang those with the food (deodorant, toothpaste, soap, etc).
Just pay attention and don't get lazy. Plenty of opportunity to sleep in safe zones and cities. Enjoy the ride.

RealTSA, read thru the older threads that followed the race. There are several spots in which racers miss the route because they didn't follow the line. You don't want to have your eyes on the screen 100% of the time, so knowing the trouble areas in advance will help. Towogatee pass area and the singletrack south of Breckenridge are two that come to mind.

It has always been for tracking multiple sports. Go to the "portfolio" page and you'll see Air Races, Canoe races and several years of Baja

In that case, it's probably fine, but it's an odd (and VERY strenuous) project.
Word with the original photo is that this was a Scout Troop doing a public service - not sure if it was planned specific to the racers or for the general good of all that tour the route.

Stefano Tomasello has his spot stopped in Fernie since Friday night. I expected him to be fast, but wasn't sure if his bikepacking experience. Hope all is OK and he is just having Spot problems.

Ha! The last few days I've resisted posting a rant about the questions and how it is obvious they haven't done any studying or reading. If they did a Google search they should find the old yearly prep and race threads. I am genuinely concerned that FB is making it way to easy to get to the starting line without realizing they are in over their head.

That is a bummer...what is the recovery time? Perhaps a September ride as a goal to recovery?

I did a week from Banff about 2 years ago, solo as well. Absolutely loved it. Saw and rode with a few other riders and always enjoyed the brief company. Usually went our own way as paces were different.
Best tip: take your time, you have all day long to ride and the sun will be out from 6am? to 9pm?; lots of time to move, so take your time and just enjoy it.
Also, if you get to stay in Butts Cabin, it was a nice place to not have to worry about bears. To find water from Butts, go back up route to the first intersection, turn right and to the river. Maybe 1mile detour, but easiest spot to get/filter water.

J - after my last trip, i thought a perfect amount of distance for a beginner group would be 75miles each day. Which allows: -Banff to a cabin that is just over the pass from Bolton (I don't have my maps on me, cabin is similar to Butts, free but 1st come basis) -that cabin to Sparwood - to Butts Cabin -to Eureka - to Red Meadow
I don't have the exact distances in front of me, but I think those were close to 75 each day. You get a shower every 2 days (Sparwood and Eureka) which makes some in groups happy. If not needed, go further to primitive camping.
