Really can't wait to get back there next year! (What the hell is wrong with me?)

Incredible!

That sucks for Ian, but how many of us had that same problem last year? Almost took me and Arno out, I know...

Getting the feeling that a lot of these comments about hike-a-bike are coming from people who didn't race last year...? Pretty sure I walked 100 miles last year, can't imagine some of them with rain and midges on top of it

Haha, thanks man! I was considering it for a tour this past winter. But then I signed up for the Transcontinental Race. I was mainly just curious what it was like: entirely dirt still? Based on your tire comment, still quite rough? I think South America is ripe for a Tour Divide style race and I was gonna see if either Ruta 40 or CA would be a worthy race option.

This $10,000 entry is bullshit. No one who isn't sponsored is likely gonna dole that out. I do think it's an interesting concept... I love that our "sporting community" is based on racing for adventure and backslaps, but it would be kind of cool if there was an optional $100 entry "donation." Just like buying into a March madness pool. If you don't donate, that's cool, you just aren't eligible to win. Say you have 100 racers (that donate): make/female winner gets $2500, the rest is doled out in a way that recognizes every single racer. Like the guy who guesses closest on how many days/hours it will take him/her; the person who logs the most accidental detour miles...etc.

I got a subscription to velomap.org for $30 and got unlimited downloads for a year.

The descents down Devils Staircase and Torridon were a lot of fun on my Jet 9 :-) but not necessary. When I (hopefully) get back next year, I'm bringing my Captain America Ritchey steel hardtail with front suspension.

I think for beginners racks have their place. I can easily (read: no thinking) outfit someone to ride the Trans North Georgia route with a rear rack. I love frame bags and all, but they are substantially more expensive than buying a Topeak rack and using your existing dry bags. Also some people aren't as awesome at strapping "regular" bags to their bike. Lastly, when I wrote the class for REI my intention was mainly for people to get an idea that there are different options from racks to using straps to MOSTLY just trimming out excess gear from your camping quiver. Try different things--it's a puzzle. In all seriousness: what would you guys like to see in a free bikepacking class? We'd love to hear any suggestions...

Just curious, an REI employee who bikepacks might have helped develop it ;-)

Did they show the PowerPoint in the class you attended in Denver toothjockey?

Just FYI - I have been testing this charger: http://www.tekkeon.com/products-tekcharge1580.html. I'm pretty impressed, considering it's about $20. I can definitely get a full charge off 4 AA rechargeables. And I just tested it with 4 lithiums. I got 2 full charges on an iPhone 5s. It's definitely not burley, but for $20 I am really happy.

For racing I use an XS prolite. As light as a neo, quite small, and no blowing up when you're exhausted. Not ideal for winter but like I said, it's the racing kit. Oh and a bargain compared to some hi tech options

76  Forums / Question and Answer / Mini aero bars?? on: March 29, 2014, 03:40:30 PM
I totally get the limitations of mini clip on aero bars and the advantages of fully adjustable ones. I really just want to know if anyone has tried the mini style bars? I am mainly interested in getting some bars to use for the Transcontinental Race where I'll be using them primarily as an alternate/resting hand position and they are pretty lightweight compared to most full aero setups.

Just curious... Is the camera completely locked in? You can pick up some pretty sweet waterproof cameras for relatively cheap online and maybe they have a lesser voltage requirement, thus simplifying your system?
78  Forums / Ultra Racing / Re: What are your wheelbuilds for multi-day/week road racing? on: March 10, 2014, 04:24:34 AM
Building some up for the Transcontinental Race right now. These were "designed" for me by my bike tech. American Classic RD2218 rims 28h, AC micro 58 front hub, AC RD205 rear hub, DT competition double butted spokes and brass nipples. I weigh about 150 and my racing/ultralight touring set up is probably 10-15 lbs. not including food/water.

I've been using the maps from http://www.velomap.org in my eTrex Vista HCx. They work great and pretty cheap, I think it was like €20 for a year or €100 for lifetime unlimited downloads. Instructions are really good too.
