Hey ron what year is your GPS? Maybe needs a firmware update? Not sure why it doesn't have the card menu. Have you taken the card out to see if anything is stored on it? I have the one that was discontinued last year. Not sure what the new GPS menus have.

With the HcX, I think once the file is save to the SD card it can only be viewed and/or exported from an SD card reader. I don't think the GPS unit accesses the saved file from the SD card. I know I have to remove the card from my HcX and read the SD card straight from my computer.

Related question: When the HcX is set to record to the SD card, does it simultaneously record to internal memory and the card? Sometimes I get the memory is 99% full and assumed that was internal memory. At what point does the HcX save the track to the SD card?
Ok I got out the GPS and played with it to try to figure out some of these answers.
The only way that I have found to retrieve the auto-saved tracks is to take out the card and download manually.

1. It records to Internal Memory when you have the Track Log On radio button selected under: Tracks > Track Log ON or OFF.
2. It will record to internal memory and to the SD when you have done step 1 above and also checked the "Log track to data card" under:  Tracks > Setup > Data Card Setup > Log Track to Data Card.
It will NOT record to SD without BOTH 1 and 2 above selected to save track.
Yes it saves both to internal memory and SD but you can clear the internal memory of the saved track easily when it starts getting full or just have the "Wrap when full" checked under: Tracks > Setup > Wrap when full.

This internal memory is additional storage to your uploaded tracks so if you have uploaded all available memory it saves some space for the tracks to be saved to internal memory. The tracks it saves to internal memory contain very basic information. The tracks saved to the SD contain the detailed information such as speed, alt. etc.

Ron -  You should be able to save the 21ish day trip to a 4 gig memory card. I had about 5 days worth of tracks in mine and it said the memory was only 1% full.

There's a setting on the HCx to log to the SD card.  You won't need to manually save it out each day.  But it will end up as multiple GPX files in the end.  So you'll need to use GPS software (Basecamp or free version of TopoFusion) to merge them together before uploading to Straaaava.

If the option for logging to the HCx (under track settings) isn't there, you will need to use "webupdater" from garmin's site to update the firmware on the GPS.  When they originally shipped it wasn't there, IRRC.
This is what I must have done. My trip was in sections on the memory card but must have been the auto-saved files from the GPS.

When I save my tracks on my Vista hcx it worked fine for me. I just saved the track everyday and then used basecamp to join them when I got home. The times were still saved on mine. This was a year ago and I don't remember the exact details but it uploaded fine to Strava and the times must have been saved because it recorded all the segment placements/times. Make sure you are downloading the saved tracks from your memory card and not the gps memory saved tracks.

Do you guys bring bike locks? Just adding up my equipment and would hate to see it grow legs and find a new home.

Me too. Anyone have the info for the Leadville bypass? Looks like only 3 stops: Silverton, Buena and Copper. I tried looking on google maps for the 5a but couldn't determine the route.

How about not getting listed on Stefan's result page unless prof of volunteer or donation?

Keep 285. It will be fast downhill and you'll probably be going as fast a the cars!

I agree with some of the above. If you impose a required donation then you essentially are charging for the race. However, if you require riders to either donate money (any amount) or volunteer (build trails, etc.) that would keep the race "free" and allow anyone to race regardless of money. Out of towners may have to plan a little more ahead to volunteer but it still gives them the option.

I was looking a the guidebook and noticed the services listed don't show any open/closed times for the stores. I know they must change but does anyone have a cheat-sheet for services and times they are open? I can call some places later this summer to make a list so we don't all have to call ahead to find out this information.
Also does anyone have information for some of the detours? The guidebook doesn't list any water stops etc. on the detours and this information would be nice to know.

Got about 2000 finds. Got tired of finding film canisters in light poles. Maybe one in 100 were worth the search. Usually the larger containers were the best to look for. Haven't searched for about 2 years now. I usually try to pick up ones in new states or countries but that's about it.

So the fastest time I could find for SW-NE is 7d10h38m - Dan Hickstein (Rode Dgo --> Den).
Any faster times? Do you guys think the Eastbound direction will be faster or slower?
77  Forums / Ultra Racing / Re: CTR 2013 Planning on: January 03, 2013, 08:35:00 PM
Thanks for the replies. Looks like this direction will definitely give the advantage to those that can make Silverton by 7:45ish.
Anyone got room for an extra bikepacker from Denver to Durango for the start?
John

Anyone have a GPS track for the reverse direction? I cant seem to 'flip' mine in BaseCamp. Maybe I'll just stick with the Denver start since I haven't ridden the entire route.
Is the new start point in Durango now the official finish for the Denver starters?
John

Edit: I guess a track is a track and maybe it doesn't need to be flipped to follow it? I guess since I'm just using the track for reference.
Looks like about 85 miles from the new start point in Durango to Silverton. Anyone ridden this way and can comment on how long it took them to get to Silverton?

How about a mass start from each end at 6am? It wouldn't be too difficult to coordinate and then racers could pick the direction they want to travel. Could even have a live web stream or something similar for the official start. Stefan could have the riders colored according to direction on the tracker map.
John

Plus the riders starting in Durango would be breaking the #1 rule  icon_biggrin

I dont like the idea of going the opposite direction. I think I will stick with the Southbound direction and run a TT. Sounds interesting but I could just see my wife's face after she drove me to Durango and then had to drive again to pick my sorry butt up somewhere if I didn't finish.
